Job summary

This post will be instrumental in our 5-year transformational programme for improving outcomes for children with Neurodiversity in Cumberland. Working in partnership with families, education, health, and community services, you will build a culture of understanding and belonging for all neurodiverse children in our community. Based on the Neurodiversity Profiling Tool successfully implemented in Portsmouth, Cumberland has the ambition that young people will have their neurodiversity needs understood earlier, and that adaptions can be made promptly to support them to achieve their potential. You will be working within a multiagency multidisciplinary team. This whole system change will require a dynamic, knowledgeable leader to provide training and consultation to the children's workforce, lead on formulation, and guide intervention for those families requiring more help.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder is responsible for developing and providing a qualified specialist psychological service for a designated group of clients within a specific pathway and in a designated locality, and is responsible for professional governance and assurance for that service. This service will provide specialist psychological assessment and therapy, clinical supervision, advice and consultation to colleagues, and to other non-professional carers, on psychological aspects of assessment, formulation, care and treatment.The post holder will ensure that the psychological services resources for which they are responsible are integrated into the pathway, and that high quality individualised care is delivered, which ensures safety and a commitment to promoting recovery and wellbeing and maximising independence.The post-holder will be responsible for the professional management of any psychological services staff within their remit, including professional registration, professional supervision, provision of training placements, identification of appropriate CPD, other training and research & development activities.The post-holder will lead on recruitment, appraisals and job planning for psychological services staff within their remit and will be appropriately involved in disciplinary and grievance processes.The post-holder will provide specialist clinical supervision and specialist clinical consultation / advice in accordance with service needs.

Person Specification

Education and Knowledge

Essential

  • Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and Neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the HCPC and British Psychological Society.
  • HCPC registered practitioner psychologist

Desirable

  • Qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology. Non-medical approved clinician

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Substantial post qualification experience of specialist psychological assessment, formulation and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings
  • Substantial further specialist training and experience, equivalent to at least 6 years' experience, including being able to demonstrate further specialist training
  • Substantial post qualification experience of delivering evidence based psychological therapy training to a range of professional groups.
  • Substantial experience of providing clinical supervision.

Desirable

  • Experience of leading R&D programmes.
  • Experience of professional management.
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health
  • Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.
  • Record of having published in either peer reviewed or academic or professional journals and/or books

Skills and Competencies

Essential

  • Specialist skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management. Specialist skills in evidence based psychological interventions and in adapting interventions to individual complex needs and complex systems.
  • Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinical sensitive information to clients, their family, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
  • Specialist teaching & training skills.
  • Specialist skills in providing clinical supervision and consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
  • Skills in strategic/organisational work and service development / redesign.

Role Specific

Essential

  • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure of highly emotive behaviour.
  • Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations and severely challenging behaviours.
  • Ability to articulate and interpret clearly the role of psychological services and the profession of clinical psychology based upon a good understanding of the framework of government and national professional policy.
