Job summary

Due to a maternity leave we are looking for a secondment cover over the next 12 months.

We have fantastic opportunities for Band 5 Occupational Therapists /newly qualified with new rotational areas.

You will need to be a reflective practitioner with good communication skills and the ability to manage your own caseload.

You will have the opportunity to experience 8 month rotations across a range of clinical areas: acute Stroke, Medical/surgical, Elective & trauma/orthopaedics, Children's (community), Neighbourhood Team (community) & Discharge to Assess (community), Hospital @ Home urgent response (community), community neuro and wheelchair services and the independent living service (social care).

The formation of the Wye Valley NHS Trust and the move to community services has provided an opportunity to look at changing the way all services are provided, in line with this change, the rotations may change echoing the local and national drive to provide care closer to patient's homes adopting the home bed is best ethos.

The team is committed to providing high quality, evidence based, reflective practice and to enable this, prides itself on a comprehensive supportive supervision structure in which we have a developed Preceptorship Programme following RCOT Career Development Framework. Along with the Trust wide preceptorship program for nursing and AHPs.

Main duties of the job

To work across the Trust in a range of in-patient and community settings, including the independent living services with Herefordshire Council - which also comprises of the home improvement agency and technology enabled living team, including major adaptation works.

To be responsible for independently managing own patient caseload without direct day-to-day supervision, depending on level of experience, demonstrating clinical autonomy.

Weekend working is involved for some of the rotations as part of our commitment to developing a 7 day service. You will be expected to work at the weekends as part of a rota once you have completed appropriate competencies and training.

There are strong links with between acute and community teams and our Preceptorship Programme is run across the Trust. All Band 5 staff are encouraged to participate in a Band 5 Peer group.

Person Specification

Education & Qualifications

Essential

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Registration with Health Care Professions Council

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Essential

  • Broad knowledge of relevant patient conditions and therapy interventions
  • Demonstration of knowledge of core Occupational Therapy skills
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD in relevant area
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary communication, assessments and record keeping
  • Computer Skills including word processing and e-mail
  • Able to make clinical decision and problem solve without direct supervision
  • Able to manage busy case load and prioritise
  • Ability to work autonomously using own knowledge skills and initiative in sometimes complex situations acknowledging role boundaries

Experience

Essential

  • NHS or equivalent experience e.g. in inpatient areas, acute or community or community services
  • Experience of using/fitting adaptive equipment
