Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for the role as a fellow in cardiology at University Hospital Southampton (UHS) NHS trust.

The position will be suitable for any candidate wishing to embark upon or develop their formal specialist training within cardiology who has the relevant experience.

UHS is a busy tertiary cardiac surgical centre and you will form part of the wider medical team within the UHS cardiology department - as a general registrar. You will take part in a 1:12 rota including CCU, nights, weekends, clinics, and ward duties. The department offers all aspects of cardiology practice - and training can be offered in all areas depending upon the successful applicants interests and level of experience. This may include echocardiography, and all aspects of of invasive cardiology.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

- You will be expected to form part of the wider medical team within the UHS cardiology department as a general registrar.

- You will form part of a 1:12 rota including CCU, nights, weekends, clinics, and ward duties.

The department offers all aspects of cardiology practice and training can be offered in all areas depending upon the successful applicants interests and level of experience. This may include echocardiography, and all aspects of invasive cardiology.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • You will require to be training in non-invasive cardiology (including competency at emergency trans-thoracic echocardiography), and basic cathlab exposure.
  • Each post comprises 1-2 cardiac training sessions, 1-2 clinics per week and time for self development training including research.
  • You will be required to participate in medical audit and continuing medical education. Undergraduate medical students from Southampton University Medical School are taught throughout the Trust and the post-holder may be required to participate in undergraduate clinical teaching.
  • There is an active research program across the region and within all trusts and the successful applicant will be encouraged to support ongoing trials and also to develop their own research interests. It is expected that the successful candidate will submit abstracts to major national and international cardiology meetings.
  • There is an active clinical research programme, and you will also be required to participate in teaching of postgraduates, visiting students and nurses.
  • You will be required to undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the running of clinical departments

Qualifications and training

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • MRCP or equivalent

Desirable

  • Higher degree
  • ACLS

Aptitudes and skills

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching

Desirable

  • B.S.E./EACVI TTE accreditation or equivalent

Previous or relevant experience

  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems

  • This post is suitable for a doctor who has started cardiology specialty training
  • Evidence of interest in cardiology

  • Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
  • Ability to work almost independently in the management of the general Adult Cardiology or Paediatric Cardiology patient including inpatient and outpatient management, with guidance from the consultant team
