Job summary

Yeovil District Hospital is excited to offer the position of ST1 LAS in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

This is a full time (40 hour), 6 month, fixed term position and is available from 7th August 2024 until 4th February 2025 in the first instance.

The post is designed to offer experience to Doctors who wish to obtain or are working towards the MRCOG qualification and are seeking to pursue career progression in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialty Training in the UK.

Main duties of the job

The role of the post will be to provide medical input to the units to enable the efficient and effective assessment and initial management of all cases. The post holder will support the Consultants who run these units.

The ST1 LAS will have day to day responsibility for patients under the care of Consultants.

The ST1 LAS will take part in the teaching of medical students when they are in session within the department. (Yeovil Academy) Teaching will involve predominantly supporting their learning on the wards where they will shadow the LAS during routine ward activity as well as patient discussions in the outpatient clinic setting. Excellent library facilities are available.

Although these posts are covering gaps in the GPVTS training programmethis is a non-training postand therefore not recognised for training by the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal College of Paediatricians and Child Health or Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Job responsibilities

To participate in the on call rota (details on job description)

To participate in audits and current research projects. These are available through individual Consultants.

To attend the active postgraduate programme with weekly lectures, radiology, medical and pathology meetings and unit presentations.

To contribute to the active journal club. There are bleep-free obligatory sessions for teaching and these are part of the weekly timetable.

To participate in the teaching of Foundation Doctors at the bedside as well as to Medical Students

To maintain a good working relationship with existing staff members in the hospital.

To perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant in conjunction, where practicable, with their colleagues both senior and junior.

To attend other hospitals within the Trust if so requested by the supervising Consultant.

While it has been agreed between the Professions and Department of Health that junior doctors accept that they will perform extraordinary duties on occasions, the Secretary of State stresses that these additional commitments are exceptional and, in particular, that junior doctors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for long periods or on a regular basis.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Medical Degree at time of applying
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice - active at time of application
  • ALS\ACLS or equivalent

Desirable

  • Additional degree or equivalent
  • Studying towards part 1 of membership exams

Experience

Essential

  • Completed Foundation Year 1 and Year 2 level in the UK or equivalent
  • Training in diagnosis and treatment of general medical conditions
  • Academic and extracurricular achievements

Desirable

  • Previous experience of working in the NHS or experience of NHS working practices and systems.

Skills Knowledge & Abilities

Essential

  • Evidence of ability to analyse and diagnose situations, prioritise and act accordingly
  • Ability to undertake on call/shift working

  • Management Skills
