Job summary

This appointment is for a full-time Obstetrician with a specialist interest in Diabetes, Bereavement, Maternal Medicine, Preterm Births. We already have a robust MDT for Diabetes and Pregnancy. Your expertise will help deliver a robust, holistic care for women. There will a further opportunity to develop our pre-existing multidisciplinary diabetes and high-risk obstetric clinics working in close collaboration with other consultants. The post holder will also be expected to Lead Diabetes service across MSE. There will be a focus on leading the management of our maternal population who have or who develop diabetes in pregnancy. The successful candidate will be expected to cover labour ward on a rotational basis along with ante-natal clinics, elective and emergency theatres. They will also be expected to contribute to our well-established diabetes MDTs.

The post holder will be expected to be actively involved in the clinical governance aspects of the directorate and the trust including risk management and CNST.

To provide expert input to cases within the central delivery suite and antenatal wards that deviate from the normal. To provide risk analysis and management plans for all cases that require specialist input.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide a consultant-led service in Obstetrics.
  • Work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team to offer expert opinion and considerate advice to women with complications in any stage of pregnancy
  • Develop the Obstetrics service by working closely with other colleagues to standardise pathways of care.
  • Provide training for trainees in the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Evolve and write, in line with Trust governance policies, pathways for patients seen within the Obstetrics service.
  • Work with the multidisciplinary team to undertake a senior role in the general provision of Obstetric Services at Basildon Hospital and MSE.
  • Provide senior leadership in the management of high-risk patients antenatally, intrapartum and postpartum in close co-operation with other specialties.
  • Attend all theatre cases to perform surgery, unless satisfied a trainee is competent to perform the operation with indirect supervision.
  • Obstetric on call commitments as part of the departmental on call rota (1 in 14).
  • Support obstetric colleagues with advice/ surgical assistance, e.g. major obstetric haemorrhage.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or Equivalent
  • Completed MRCOG or equivalent.
  • CCT in Obstetrics & Gynaecology
  • ATSM in advanced Labour ward management
  • ATSM in High Risk Obstetric Medicine

Desirable

  • ATSM in Maternal medicine
  • MSc, MD, PhD, MA or Masters in Education or related discipline

Experience

Essential

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist.
