Job summary

You will be working as part of a clinical team, including doctors, nurses and other health care professionals and the role you perform will directly contribute to saving and improving patients lives. You will perform complex serological investigations on a variety of interesting cases and regularly collaborating with the National Frozen Blood Bank to provide blood for patients with the rarest of blood types. You will be involved in antenatal investigations, performing antibody Titration and quantification. You will use flow cytometry to perform estimation of Feto-maternal Haemorrhage and you will perform genotyping using PCR technology. You will receive the very highest quality serology training from experts in their field. You will use specialist techniques to provide lifesaving treatment for the most challenging and complex cases. Main duties of the job

In this role your responsibilities will include: Being able for perform, analyse, record and interpret a wide range of laboratory investigations and technical procedures relating to the issue of patient test results for organ transplant and blood transfusion and the issue of blood and tissue products, with the support of the team Handling blood and tissue samples and operate a range of laboratory analysers and equipment Supporting and training of new and less experienced staff Undertaking urgent on-call work providing 24/7 testing and advice, depending on specialty see About the Benefits Being able to work variable hours and days, weekends and bank holidays as per the roster within the department (unless otherwise rostered within the shift agreement) with appropriate notice, depending on specialty. You will be required to participate in the shift rota and on call rotas and to provide cover during operational emergencies.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Good understanding of Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), UK Blood Transfusion Service (UKBTS) and British Committee for Standards in Haematology (BCSH) guidelines.
  • Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist (which must be maintained).
  • Evidence of completing a structured training programme in Transfusion and Transplantation Science.

Experience

Essential

  • In depth knowledge and understanding of the Biomedical Scientist role within NHSBT.
  • Broad understanding of the NHSBT including its functions/departments and the wider healthcare community.
  • Broad Knowledge of transfusion and transplantation science.
  • Competent in a range of manual scientific techniques.
  • Experienced in the use of a range of laboratory equipment.
  • Experience of working with information technology using Microsoft Office packages (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams and PowerPoint).
