Deputy Head of Midwifery & Gynaecology

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, inspirational and motivated midwifery leader to join the senior Midwifery team. We are looking for a talented, passionate and driven Senior Midwife to take continue our transformation and development of maternity services.

Main duties of the job

The focus for this post will be deputising for the Head of Midwifery & Gynaecology on the Bedford site with specific overview of the workforce and operational running of the service.

Job responsibilities

Working in collaboration with the Head of Midwifery & Gynaecology to provide professional and operational leadership and management of the services, delivering a safe quality service while meeting financial targets. The post holder will provide senior advice, support and strategic leadership. They require the ability to develop a quality service ensuring high standards of care, whilst improving the patients experience and ensuring clinical effectiveness and service efficiency.

The post holder will be required to have substantial previous experience at a senior level within maternity and possess leadership qualities to engage teams and drive improvements. Previous experience of implementing transformational change would be beneficial.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Midwife
  • Current and relevant registration on NMC Register
  • Evidence of relevant continuous professional development
  • Management qualification or equivalent experience

Desirable

  • Relevant postgraduate qualification
  • Leadership development training
  • Teaching Qualifications or equivalent experience

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of substantial experience as a Matron/Senior Clinical Midwife, overseeing a number of clinical areas/services and demonstrating a depth and breadth of nursing knowledge
  • Able to demonstrate collaborative working across professions and services
  • Broad clinical experience across maternity services and settings
  • Experience of managing a clinical team including significant experience of staff management, including the setting of objectives, team and individual appraisal, recruitment and disciplinary issues
  • Budget management experience, including reducing costs, monitoring and determining corrective action

Desirable

  • Evidence of taking the lead in an area of work across more than one clinical area
  • Able to develop short, medium and long term strategies for the development of the clinical areas.
  • Experience of working collaboratively within multi -professional situations.
  • Track record of serving on a range of committees

Other

Essential

  • Knowledge of current developments in nursing & political awareness of current NHS issues
  • Knowledge of quality improvement and experience of leading projects and / or implementing new policies across a service
  • In-depth knowledge of clinical governance processes, risk management and health and safety
