Job summary

Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust is looking to appoint an ambitious, enthusiastic and outward looking full time consultant adult and paediatric neurosurgeon interested in adult hydrocephalus and paediatric functional neurosurgery. We are looking to appoint a colleague who will push the boundaries, have a comprehensive vision of a career path to make an impact locally and beyond. The successful candidate is expected to complement the existing consultants' subspecialty interests, and develop their own clinical specialist service along with clinical research.

Main duties of the job

Full time (substantive) Consultant in Adult and Paediatric Neurosurgery (10 PA)

Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust is looking to appoint a Consultant adult and paediatric neurosurgeon interested in adult hydrocephalus and paediatric functional neurosurgery. The successful candidate is expected to complement the existing consultants' subspecialties interests and develop their own clinical specialist service. It is advantageous if there is interest in developing paediatric functional neurosurgery and CSF disorders across the age range.

The job is advertised as 10PA. Extra PAs may be available for undertaking further clinical activities, administrative, managerial, teaching and external roles. The job requires being on call with departmental adult (1 in 14) and paediatric consultant (1 in 5) on call rota. The on call rota is non -residential.

Please note that an additional 0.5 SPA is provided for the successful candidate to support orientation and induction. This is provided as part of the overall 10 PA contract and is for the first 12 months in post.

Job responsibilities

The QMC Neurosurgery department is one of the busiest neurosurgical departments in the country. We provide both adult and paediatric services to a wide regional area of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire with catchment population of around three and half million. Our highly specialised unit undertakes around 2500 neurosurgical emergency, urgent and elective operations annually around 250 -300 of these in children. We are a part of the East Midlands Trauma Service and a major trauma unit. We run four modern, fully equipped theatres and have access to additional emergency theatres as required every day. The department has the latest neuro navigation systems, stereotactic frames, intraoperative ultrasound, 5-ALA and ICG-enabled microscopes and endoscopes. We have intraoperative MRI and an integrated neurosurgical operative suite. We have recently acquired a neurosurgical robot. Nottingham University Hospitals brain tumour centre is one of only two Trusts in the country to be recognised as a Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence for both Adult and Paediatric tumour treatment. We are currently the only centre in the Midland providing age-comprehensive Functional neurosurgery and Neuromodulation service. Our fellowship programme is well sought-after and we currently run RCS fellowships in Functional Neurosurgery and Neuro-oncology.
