West London Children's Healthcare WLCH at St Mary's Hospital is a tertiary referral center which admits children and young people with acute and complex conditions. The Children Services at St Mary's Hospital are aligned with the Paediatric care provision at Chelsea and Westminster and West Middlesex Hospitals and the post holder will be part of a multi-disciplinary team putting the service values of these three hospitals at the center of their practice.

We have an exciting opportunity for a 12 months maternity cover for the Band 7 or Band 6 Allergy Clinical Nurse Specialist, dependent on experience. You will be based at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, but expected to work cross sites with some services based at Hammersmith Hospital. This is a great opportunity for an experienced nurse to provide visible and supportive leadership to our team. The Paediatric Allergy Day Unit is a busy unit which provides a 5-day service; and supported by a team of world renowned Specialist Consultants. Our staff are trained in oral food & drug challenges, intravenous drug challenges, venom desensitization, immunotherapy, anti IgE treatment; along with a range of diagnostic testing procedures including skin prick testing and spirometry.

The post holder will work in partnership with service users and enabling their care and support by assessing and managing care of children who attend our Paediatric Allergy Day Unit and our consultant and nurse-led clinics, which includes the Hammersmith Hospital site. Aside from promoting positive learning culture, the post holder will lead on a range of risks, governance and quality improvement. The post holder will work with the MDT in monitoring and maintaining policies, standards of nursing care and staff development. This will involve dealing with complex situations and having to take appropriate action in elective, and emergency or unforeseen situations.

It is an expectation that all staff employed who come in contact with children and young people have a duty to safeguard and promote their welfare.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide safe, high quality, individualised, evidence based nursing care with the support and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. This includes dealing with complex situations, taking appropriate action in an emergency and unforeseen situations.
  • Develop the specialist clinical skills and knowledge to achieve the competences required in order to carry out all relevant duties without direct supervision.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist allergy nursing care and advice to support children, young people, their families and carers managing their health conditions.
  • In partnership with the Lead Paediatric Allergy Nurse, the allergy nursing team and multi-disciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining policies, standards of nursing care and staff development.

Education & Qualifications

Essential

  • RSCN/RN (child)
  • Experience of supervision of junior staff, mentorship qualification or equivalent
  • Educated to degree level in relevant subject area or equivalent experience

Desirable

  • Nurse Leadership Courses
  • Spirometry ARTP qualification or working towards

Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Minimum of 2 years band 5
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Experience in allergy
  • Research and audit experience

Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Be able to demonstrate knowledge of specialist patient group
  • Excellent communication skills
