Emergency Surgery Pharmacist

Want an exciting, demanding, fulfilling job that will truly make a difference to patient care? We are looking to recruit a specialist prescribing pharmacist to participate in emergency surgical ward rounds.

This role is highly valued by both the pharmacy and emergency surgery teams and has demonstrated improved patient outcomes with more efficient patient flow, higher compliance with medicines reconciliation targets and VTE policies. The most recent post holder has presented on how the role provides improvements in patient discharge efficiency and safety at the ASBGI conference 2024. We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive prescribing pharmacist to join our forward-thinking team and help optimise medicines in our surgical patients.

You will be expected to integrate into the multidisciplinary team alongside anaesthetists, surgeons, advanced nurse practitioners, pharmacy staff, together with ward based staff to provide outstanding pharmaceutical care for our patients.

Main duties of the job

  • Lead and provide highly specialist training to pharmacy colleagues, nursing staff and medical staff on aspects of medicines optimisation and drug use.
  • Be a clinical tutor for a junior pharmacist undertaking the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy conducting assessment and appraisals and providing feedback on performance to the university as required.
  • Evaluate the performance of rotational pharmacists against identified criteria using departmental tools and competence frameworks.
  • Contribute to ward-based undergraduate, MPharm level clinical teaching.
  • Lead and develop strategies to meet the training needs for pharmacy, nursing and medical staff including participation in formal video conferencing sessions and educational meetings
  • Act as a mentor for junior and senior pharmacists for clinical pharmacokinetic consultation.
  • Demonstrate a critical approach towards pharmacy practice in pain services. Lead and participate in clinical pharmacy audit and research projects within pain services and trust wide pharmacy services.
  • Integrate research evidence into practice.
  • Undertake and supervise practice research in accordance with the pharmacy research agenda, including the presentation of findings with a view to publication. This includes audit concerning the NICE guidance and NSF objectives.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential

  • Vocational Masters Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent.
  • Member of the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Diploma or MSc in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent experiential learning.
  • Extensive experience as a qualified pharmacist working within a range of clinical areas.
  • Experience in delivering education and training of other staff.

Desirable

  • Independent Prescribing qualification and registration as an Independent Prescriber.
  • Other post graduate qualifications ie MSc.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Good all round clinical knowledge and practical skills in other areas.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret and relay complex and sensitive information.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Up to date knowledge of current NHS policies, processes and structures.
