Job summary

NELFT would like to introduce the launch of the Intensive Support Team, which aims to support people with a Learning Disability and Autism who requires specialist crisis intervention. We believe that individuals who display challenging behaviours, including those with a mental health condition, should have the same opportunities to live satisfying and valued lives.

The service was developed in response to the best means of supporting our people with a learning disability and autism at a critical time in their journey, offering the least restrictive environment and ensuring that we provide the best response to those users of the service who needs specialist support, together with their carers and families.

The post holder will hold a relevant clinical qualification to a degree level in Learning Disability and have experience working within Learning Disability and Autism services.

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, they will manage a caseload of patients with learning disability and mental health needs, using evidence-based practice.

They are required to take a lead role in the leadership of junior staff and support assistants through supervision, training and appraisal.

Main duties of the job

  1. Provide a range of interventions and assessments of people who have a learning disability and present with a mental illness and or severe challenging behaviour, taking into consideration the patient's physical/cognitive/perceptual skills to identify the patient's abilities and areas of difficulty.
  2. Expected to work within a values-driven, recovery-based approach that embeds the Positive Behaviour Support framework. Post holders will have experience working with people who have a learning disability and either mental ill-health and complex behavioural needs
  3. To be responsible for organising and prioritising own caseload in the day-to-day allocation of work whilst being able to work flexibly to meet the needs of their patients, their relatives and carers and the service.
  4. To deputise when required in the absence of the Team/Service Lead and delegate appropriately to more junior staff members, support workers and rehabilitation assistants as appropriate.
  5. To have organisational knowledge relating to Trust protocols and procedures and adhere to them.
  6. To be responsible for providing accurate records of information required by the Trust for audit purposes.
  7. To ensure effective team-level risk management by accident/incident reporting, assessing and controlling risk and ensuring residual risks are added to the Trust register.

  • Current professional Registration
  • Evidence of further study at post-graduate level or equivalent experience (particularly around Positive Behaviour Support)

  • Ability to work in a recovery focused model autonomously, make decisions and effectively manage own caseload
  • Advanced clinical reasoning skills - ability to decide and establish appropriate action in allocation of workload and other clinical decisions
  • Display effective communication skills- and an ability to work in a flexible proactive manner to respond to the needs of the service . This will include having and enthusiastic and committed approach to service user involvement in care and delivery of service
  • Organisational skills: To be innovative and work on own initiative and prioritise own workload
  • Time management skills - ability to prioritise and implement management strategies for self and others
  • Leadership skills - Ability to manage staff and delegate work appropriately
  • Ability to provide staff with managerial and appropriate clinical supervision. Ensuring staff are in receipt of professional supervision with the respective professional supervisor To use own supervision effectively

Knowledge

Essential

  • An awareness of national policies and legislation and local drivers within mental health services
  • Demonstrate specialist clinical knowledge and experience in the field of learning disability and autism
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983; Mental Capacity Act, Care Act and related codes of practice and guidance
  • Understanding of Personalisation agendas , recovery models and Transforming Care agenda and evidence based practice
  • Knowledge of Codes of Professional Conduct
  • Knowledge of the models and principles of care used in relation to Transforming Care and Crisis Intervention

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 4 years post qualification experience within a learning disability setting
  • Experience of working within the LDA pathway with evidence of completing high quality assessments, care planning including Risk management
  • Extensive experience of undertaking complex mental state assessment, risk and needs assessment with people with LDA
  • Experience of providing managerial and clinical supervision to junior colleagues
