Job summary

This post is for a 12 month fixed term post ST1-3 level Trust Grade Doctor in Oncology with dedicated time allocated to professional development. This is a full time post of which 80% will be direct clinical care and 20% allocated to professional development and service improvement. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will use this time appropriate to their stage of training. ST1-2 trainees will be expected to undertake relevant audit and quality improvement projects during their time in Oncology alongside medical professional development. ST3 trainees may choose to undertake more specific Oncology training and experience including site-specific outpatient clinic and MDT experience.

It offers a unique opportunity to expand clinical skills and experience alongside development of broader professional skills. Main duties of the job

This is one of three posts that will rotate to spend 4 months through the following 3 areas

  1. Management of Oncology Ward inpatients
  2. Acute Oncology outpatient Service
    1. Telephone Triage and outpatient review clinics for admission avoidance
    2. Review of on-treatment Oncology patients in the day unit and chemotherapy suite (CDU) to improve patient safety and experience
    3. Acute management and admission of acutely unwell patients presenting via oncology outpatient services
    4. Oncology scan result clinics
  1. Acute Oncology Inpatient/Outreach service
    1. Advice for medical and surgical teams regarding Oncology patient admitted with complications from their cancer or treatment with support from Oncology specialists to improve care and minimise length of stay
    2. Pathway advice for new diagnoses
    3. Review and admission avoidance of patients in ED during working hours

In addition, there must be a commitment to undertake and complete key audits and key service development priorities for the Oncology Service

The above duties will be clinically supervised by the weekly on call ward Consultant and Specialist Registrars. They may be revised or expanded.
