We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated clinical pharmacist to lead our critical care and surgery team. You will provide highly specialist and advanced clinical and professional pharmaceutical services to critical care and surgical patients at Newham Hospital.

You will be supporting the Clinical Services Lead pharmacist at Newham University Hospital in leading a team to deliver high quality clinical pharmacy services within the speciality.

The successful candidate will join a supportive, integrated pharmacy team, committed to delivering high quality patient care. You will have access to further educational opportunities and senior clinicians within Pharmacy and other disciplines who can provide mentorship and aid professional development.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the Clinical Pharmacy and Medicines Management services within the critical care and surgery services

To manage the rotational specialist pharmacist, and trainees within the critical care and surgery rotations and ensure provision and continuity of service across the site.

To support the development of critical care and surgery in line with the Pharmacy Department and Barts Health Strategies.

Close working with the multidisciplinary and wider pharmacy team to optimise patient flow. To actively support the improvement of Pharmacy Services based on evidence and appropriate innovation metrics.

Your primary base will be Newham University Hospital. However, there will also be a requirement for you to visit other trust sites when necessary.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MPharm or equivalent
  • Registered as a pharmacist with the GPhC
  • Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy / Pharmacy Practice or equivalent
  • Independent prescribing qualification, or willing to work towards

Desirable

  • GCP Trained in clinical trials

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience post registration in a hospital based clinical post
  • Proven experience of good performance in previous posts
  • Previous evaluations or reviews of medicines
  • Experience of providing evaluated information on drug expenditure
  • Appropriate experience in providing a hospital- based pharmacy service to a Critical Care or high dependency unit (Level 2 & Level 3)
  • Evidence of basic teaching and tutoring in a hospital setting through training others e.g., pre-registration / foundation training pharmacists
  • Experience in supervising and organising staff and work

Desirable

  • Successful experience of managing & leading projects
  • Experience of successfully managing staff, performing appraisals, and giving feedback
  • Experience of delivering professional training and education
  • Experience of managing guidelines and PGDs relevant to the speciality

Knowledge

Essential

  • Understanding of GPhC revalidation requirements
  • Knowledge of medicines management systems at ward level
  • Up to date knowledge of legislation relevant to pharmacy practice, e.g., controlled drugs, Health and Safety at Work
  • Understanding of stock control systems
  • Excellent knowledge of the medical management and pharmaceutical care needs of Critical Care (level 2 & 3) and surgical patients
  • Awareness of current national standards, guidelines, and service delivery issues relevant to Critical Care and Surgery patients
  • Understanding of the importance of adherence to SOPs and legislation
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of patient safety initiatives
  • Knowledge of drug and therapeutics at Diploma level or equivalent
  • Knowledge of the law and relevant guidance relating to medicines, pharmacy, rationing decisions in the NHS, Payment by Results (PbR) and commissioning in relation to PN
