Job summary
As a member of the North Middlesex University Hospital Phlebotomy team, the post holder will be expected to undertake phlebotomy duties within in our inpatient service and at our community hubs as directed by the phlebotomy management in order to provide a 'fit-for-purpose' Phlebotomy service.

The successful candidate will be part of a dedicated phlebotomy team based at North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust and will work in our Outpatient clinic, inpatient Wards and in our local community hubs, as directed by the service management. You must be willing to work cross site and at any associated outreach clinics within the Trust when required.
The shifts will usually be anything between hours 07:30-18:00 however these are subject to change depending on service needs.
The Phlebotomy team covers weekend duties on a rotational basis; therefore flexibility of the successful candidate is essential.

Job description
Job responsibilities
1. To take blood samples from hospital and General Practitioner patients by venepuncture, using the Vacutainer system, syringe and needle, butterfly technique or finger-prick according to the written protocol.
2. To ensure correct patient and sample identification.
3. To ensure samples are correctly labelled, put in the correct containers to reach the laboratory as required within designated timelines.
4. To work as a member of the phlebotomy team at NMUH sites and at GP surgeries as required.
5. To co-operate fully with other staff to provide the most effective service to our patients.
6. To perform Glucose Tolerance Tests when required.
7. After suitable training and experience to take blood samples from children and patients with psychiatric disorders.
8. To select appropriate puncture site to ensure the suitability of blood samples. and adhere to strict protocols around sample taking.
9. To ensure that your mandatory training is completed and up to date as per Trust policy and any other relevant core training and training that will enhance practice.
10. Be responsible for the safe disposal of contaminated materials, including sharps following IPC guidelines and best practice.
11. Responsible for monitoring and replenishing of medical stock.
12. Support other members of staff in their orientation to the department and role.
13. Be aware of and participate in the reporting of any incidents using the online DATIX system / equivalentchannel.
14. Participate fully as a team member, sharing knowledge and information and supporting colleagues, to promote a cohesive clinic team and the achievement of team objectives.

- Comply with the required level of manual dexterity
- Has a minimum of six months phlebotomy experience

- Has experience of working in an acute hospital setting
- Has good general knowledge of Infection control as it applies to venepuncture
- Can demonstrate the ability to work as team member
- Can demonstrate the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
- Willing to work with infected material and hazardous reagents after instructions, and to observe all safety procedures
- Ability to communicate within the team to deliver effective service
- Prepared to work flexible hours or limited shift work including weekends and evenings
- Can demonstrate sound knowledge of the anatomy of the forearm and hand and able to select the current vein for venepuncture at all times
- Has experience of dealing with challenging or stressful situations
- Has knowledge of hospital IT systems such as EPR, Swiftqueue, CareFlow and Microsoft office packages
Desirable
- 2 or more years acute inpatient phlebotomy experience
- Experience of dealing with Warfarin or DOAC clinics
- Has experience of domiciliary services

- Can demonstrate an understanding of equal opportunities policy and confidentiality and a willingness to comply wit it
- Has good customer care skills and can deal quickly and tactfully with customer queries concerning blood testing, hospital appointments and related issues
- Experience of running a phlebotomy clinic or GP phlebotomy service as a stand alone service
