Job summary

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist to support the medical retina and corneal services.

This post is available asap until 31 December 2024.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will join a team of 20 Consultant Ophthalmologists at an exciting time of new development and investment in the Department of Ophthalmology at Addenbrooke's Hospital.

Applicants are required to be on the GMC Specialist Register with a CCT in Ophthalmology or Medical Ophthalmology (or be within six months of the expected date of award of CCT at time of interview). Full registration and a Licence to Practice with the GMC is required at the time of application. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC's Good Medical Practice (2013). Job description

Job responsibilities

The applicant will be mainly based in the medical retina service which has undergone rapid expansion following the introduction of anti-VEGF intravitreal therapy. There is a dedicated outpatient treatment room for intravitreal injections. There is a retinal imaging suite providing fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, ICG angiography, OCT imaging and B-scan ultrasonography.

The applicant will also provide primary care support for the corneal service working in conjunction with the emergency eye care service. The corneal service is supported by a full range of diagnostic equipment including corneal topography, anterior segment OCT and anterior segment ultrasonography.

The Department of Ophthalmology benefits from a hospital-wide electronic patient record (Epic) which makes Addenbrookes Hospital a digitally advanced Trust. This digital system helps to improve patient care and provides opportunities for comprehensive audit evaluations and research projects.

Addenbrookes Hospital also provides outstanding facilities for research with opportunities for close collaboration between medical specialties. The Cambridge Eye Research Centre (CERC) provides the research infrastructure for ophthalmology studies within the department.
