Job summary

The Commission on Human Medicines (CHM) is looking to appoint one expert to the Oncology and Haematology Expert Advisory Group (OHEAG).

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) enhances and improves the health of millions of people every day through the effective regulation of medicines and medical devices, underpinned by science and research.

The OH EAG is an independent advisory committee of the CHM that provides impartial advice to the Licensing Authority (Health Ministers) on the safety, quality and efficacy of medicines used in the treatment of malignant disease or blood disorders.

As a member of the Committee, you will possess or develop a working knowledge and understanding of the UK medicines regulatory procedures and possess or develop a working knowledge of oncology clinical trials.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an experienced clinician practising in academic institutions, tertiary hospitals or large district hospitals, with experience in complex clinical scenarios and academic work including clinical trials.

Haematologist with expertise in haematological oncology

About us

In the public interest, ministers need the advice they receive on matters relating to the regulation of medicines and medical devices to be impartial. They also need to be able to get advice from a wide range of highly-skilled professionals who are senior and well regarded in their respective fields and from a range of appointed lay representatives.

A number of independent advisory committees have been established to provide this advice. These committees can also establish working groups to address specific problems.

The Oncology and Haematology Expert Advisory Group (OHEAG) is a sub-committee of the Commission on Human Medicines and advises on the safety, quality and efficacy of medicines used in the treatment of malignant disease or blood disorders.

Qualifications

Essential

  • The members must be able to demonstrate the qualities, skills and experience to meet all the essential criteria for appointment.
  • experience in haematology oncology
  • be recognised by their peers as a leader in their field e.g. national academies and Royal Colleges
  • be a skilled communicator
  • be able to assimilate and interpret complex scientific information and formulate evidence-based comments /advice at short notice
  • be available to attend/join the OHEAG meetings (currently take place virtually on one Thursday afternoon per month) with flexibility to accommodate unforeseen changes and provide advice between meetings, if required
  • be able and prepared to contribute actively to the work of the OHEAG
  • be willing to develop a working knowledge and understanding of UK medicines regulatory framework and procedures
  • maintain strict confidentiality with respect to the work of the EAG
  • be willing to declare conflicts of interest
  • be committed to the values of selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, professionalism, impartiality and consistency

Desirable

  • Experience in advanced cellular therapies is advantageous
