Job summary

Applications are invited for a Consultant in the Neurology Department.

The Department functions as a Sub-Directorate within the Specialist Medicine Division. The post holder(s) will be responsible for on-going care of Neurology patients both as inpatients and outpatients. We welcome candidates with a special interest in patients with Headache, or any other Neurology sub-specialty, and we are committed to support candidates with training and time to develop their expertise in in their chosen area of interest.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to integrate within the team of existing consultant staff in order to provide excellent quality care to all patients. The candidate(s) will be expected to provide specialist cover for inpatients as well as outpatients.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Provide a neurology service of the highest quality, which includes programmed activities for out- patient clinics and in-patient ward referrals.
  • Contribute to development of the neurology service to support the trust in ensuring provision of high quality clinical care.
  • Develop further links and patterns of shared working between Mid and South Essex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Barts and the London NHS Trust.
  • Work flexibly with colleagues to support the timely management of emergency and inpatients
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary clinical meetings (MDT)

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification
  • Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register for Neurology

Desirable

  • A higher degree in medicine (e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent)
  • Evidence of service improvement experience

Experience

Essential

  • Experience and training required for UK CCST in Neurology

Desirable

  • A specialist interest clinic to be developed at The Royal London Hospital.
  • Understanding of current issues within Neurology and future direction of specialty.

Skills

Essential

  • Good knowledge of the spectrum of neurological disease
  • Neurological Examination skills
  • Lumbar puncture skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively to enable adequate communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.

Desirable

  • Competent in CT & MRI brain, spine interpretation
  • Evidence of audit participation
