Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principle Practitioner Psychologist provide a high quality, specialist psychology service within an award winning innovative MDT psychodermatology service.

The role will include providing specialist psychological assessment and therapy, offering advice and consultation on psychological aspects of chronic skin conditions to other health professionals and supporting clinical team members who provide psychosocial care.

The post presents a range of opportunities for the post holder to establish or further develop skills in working physical health settings and with medical teams, service development, audit, business planning, management and leadership.

The post holder will be provided with regular clinical supervision as well as support from the Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Clinical Health Psychology.Peer supervision sessions are also arranged on a regular basis with other experienced practitioner psychologists across the Clinical Health Psychology service.

The appointee will be registered with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist. Experience of working with long-term physical health problems is essential and experience with dermatological problems is a preference.

Your primary base will be at the Royal London Hospital. However, there is also flexibility for you to work from home where appropriate.

Main duties of the job

To be an integral member of an innovative collaborative MDT Psychodermatology Clinic based at the Royal London Hospital. The Psychodermatology Clinic is an award-winning one-stop service for patients with chronic skin disease and concomitant mental health issues.

The practitioner psychologist will offer outpatient work with patients and their families. The overall aim of the specialist psychological service will be to reduce the emotional distress & functional impact associated with chronic skin conditions, & promote adherence to treatment, and positive treatment outcomes.

The role will include provision of psychological advice, consultation & support to the wider team; including nurses & doctors, as well as the opportunity to contribute a psychological perspective at national virtual MDT meetings.

The aim of the post is to develop a stepped care model of service provision within the dermatology service & the post holder will work with nurses to support delivery of evidence based interventions such as motivational interviewing, habit reversal training & step one mental health support. There is scope to provide nursing staff with on-going support and supervision in this practice.

There is a strong recognition within the service for the value of the role of psychology & the aim is to develop this into a permanently funded post. This means that the practitioner psychologist will also lead the development of a business case to secure permanent funding for the post.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Significant supervised psychology practice experience in NHS or equivalent by a suitably qualified practitioner psychologist.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, in-patient and residential care settings.
  • Ability to demonstrate significant post-doctoral specialist experience in working in the field of health psychology
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care and treatment, both as an independent practitioner and also within the context of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Extended involvement in teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision

Skills

Essential

  • Skills as a Senior Clinician to undertake clinical leadership roles and tasks within multidisciplinary and multi-agency contexts
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups

Desirable

  • Experience of recruitment and line management of staff.
  • Experience of supervising the psychological practice of other professions.
  • Substantial experience of working as a practitioner psychologist in psychodermatology

Knowledge

Essential

  • Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology.
  • Knowledge of legislation and its implications for both clinical practice and professional management in relation to the client group and mental health
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as required by the HCPC.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent) as accredited by the BPS or HCPC, including specifically models of psychopathology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology
  • Registration with the HCPC as a practitioner psychologist
  • Training in clinical practice supervision.
