Job summary

Working together with the Practice Development Team and the Childrens Emergency Department (CED) Senior Team, the post holder will provide the Clinical Education Support for the Student Nursing Associates within CED, including those on spoke visits or placements to the department. To provide both practical and pastoral support to those students and escalate any concerns through the Clinical Nurse Manager and the Trust Nursing Associate Practice Facilitators as required. Aiming for the Student Nursing Associates to achieve high standards of clinical competence and feel confident in the deliverance of Nursing Care.

In addition to this, they will ensure that appropriate learning environments are created and maintained to drive the integration of theory in practice, through the means of admin and organisation, teaching, and management of professional standards, with support from their Clinical Manager.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure that all Trust wide standards are maintained and monitored to improve the quality of total care to all who come into contact with the Emergency and Children's Services.

Job responsibilities

  • Promote best practice in ensuring NMC Record Keeping Standards.
  • To monitor student progress in practice placements, supporting both learners and managers in the delivery of a quality learning experience, escalating any concerns to the relevant Practice Facilitator. This will involve both on site and off site placements.
  • To ensure these students are supported in becoming competent and capable practitioners by facilitating the supervisors and assessors in the support of learners in the practice setting.
  • To ensure structures are in place to provide pastoral support to those learners who are experiencing professional / personal issues within the practice setting, escalating as required.
  • Demonstrate clinical and practice expertise through personal practice and by leading by example
  • Support and work alongside the SNAs during their clinical shifts
  • To work 0.6 (WTE) clinical shifts alongside role, with possibility of additional hours when service needs demand.
  • To address clinical opportunities for the SNAs whilst you are on shift, and encourage engagement
  • Advise and support existing practice learning support staff in the supervision and assessment of students
  • Understand key governance requirements for practice learning and support practice staff in ensuring these are maintained, escalating concerns as necessary
  • Understand the Standards of Proficiency for Nursing Associates and ensure that learners are supported to develop practice learning opportunities to enable them to meet regulatory requirements in line with curriculum outcomes and objectives, escalating concerns as appropriate
  • Use communication and interpersonal skills to work with diverse settings in health and social care whilst supporting students in practice.
  • Work with practice support staff to identify the need for and monitor progress against action plans to support students practice learning.
  • Liaise and escalate to Practice Facilitators any concerns that affect the practice learning environment or student learning experience.
  • Act as a champion and information resource for all staff regarding the role of nursing associate in practice and support the safe integration of the role into nursing establishments
  • Work in partnership with managers and practice learning support staff to provide an environment conducive to learning, and advise on practice assessment requirements.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities e.g. Quality Assurance reviews
  • Ensure all learning activities are in accordance with evidenced based practice and in line with placement provider guidance or requirements.
  • Provide feedback to practice areas regarding student evaluation of the placement and ensure that relevant action plans are supported and monitored as appropriate.
  • Liaise with the Senior Paediatric Nursing Team to establish specific service need requirements
  • Maintain systems to ensure feedback from study days and courses to cascade knowledge within the team.
  • Where appropriate work towards shared learning and development opportunities for Paediatric nurses within the Trust.
  • Participate in monitor and review activities and promote the use of critical analysis of evidence based practice.
  • Promote reflective practice in line with clinical governance e.g. by participating in critical incident analysis.
  • Maintain own clinical competency in line with the Regulatory Bodies standards.
  • Be able to identify ones own skills and performance to identify strengths and development needs.Be responsible for own professional development as identified on personal development plan.
