Job summary

CBC Health Federation, the GP Federation in Gateshead, has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual. The role of Chief Executive is a challenging but rewarding one and the successful applicant will lead a dedicated team of professionals covering a wide range of primary care services, mostly within the NHS provider arena.

As the strategic lead for the organisation, you are responsible for delivery of the organisational strategy and associated accountability framework, supporting the Heads of Service to deliver their divisional plans and supporting the Directors in their quest to ensure the company remains viable, and flexible to Primary Care needs.

The role is a front facing role in the Gateshead System so you will possess highly developed communication skills as you will work across partner organisational boundaries, supporting delivery of clinical and non-clinical services to a variety of stakeholders.

Main duties of the job

The Chief Executive has overall responsibility for leadership and performance, ensuring CBC Health Federation is well-positioned to meet the challenges of a constantly changing healthcare environment and is capable of responding flexibly in response to new business opportunities. The CEO is accountable for ensuring the organisation delivers a range of high-quality services that support the development of Gatesheads primary care community, whilst maintaining the ongoing success and viability of the company.

The Chief Executive has overall responsibility for creating, planning, implementing, and integrating the strategic direction of CBC, including overall responsibility for all aspects of work of CBC divisions.

The Chief Executive is accountable for ensuring there is a risk and mitigation framework in place across the whole organisation with strong safety and risk prevention strategies to underpin it.

The Chief executive is accountable to the Directors in ensuring the financial viability and sustainability of the company is maintained.

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience in a senior position, ideally in the healthcare setting.
  • Strong understanding of the current issues relating to changes within the NHS and ability to take identify and take advantage of the opportunities available.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current government and public policy relating to the NHS and ability to understand how that can be assimilated for the benefit of the company.
  • A strong and confident leader who will work in harmony with the board, understand the required governance and be able to participate in the joint setting of targets and objectives.
  • Experience of leading and managing large groups of staff across a wide variety of services delivery areas.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of transformation principles and their application
  • Evidence of partnership working in primary, secondary and social care settings.
  • An entrepreneur, capable of expanding the influence and activities of CBC and realising development opportunities on a stand-alone basis or in partnership with other organisations.
  • Capable of successfully managing budgets. A sound understanding of finance, NHS service funding and contract negotiation. A general overview of the opportunities available in the current marketplace.
  • Able to create the necessary contacts and networks to support bidding and service goals.
  • Able to challenge underperformance and set realistic goals to achieve to ensure business success.
  • A good communicator at every level. Able to persuade and facilitate change. Able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent Interpersonal skills able to form good relationships with other leaders in the organisation, the GCP and other health and social care partners
  • Able to demonstrate the leadership necessary to make the organisation's mission a success. This includes providing vision direction, attracting followers, be approachable, reliable and act with integrity at all times.
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Able to relate effectively to a wide range of people both within and outside the organisation
  • A team builder, able to delegate and with the emotional intelligence to lead creatively and empower others to maximise their strengths
  • Strong performance management skills, with the ability to set and monitor boundaries decisively
  • Experience of creating a culture of learning to help enhance and grow the skills and abilities of employees.
  • A successful track record of achievement as a senior manager in a large, complex, multidisciplinary and challenging organisation in a relevant service area.
  • Understanding of NHS and local government cultures, structures, and policies.
  • Understanding of the local and national social and political environment
  • Practical experience in facilitating change at a macro level
  • Budget management skills.
  • The normal duties of the role may involve travel on a regular or occasional basis.
  • Advanced IT skills /ECDL or equivalent

  • Significant experience of working at a senior level within the Gateshead system.
  • Knowledge of EMIS and patient management systems

  • Able to deliver high volumes of work to the required standard under pressured time scales.
  • Requiring frequent concentration, unpredictable work patterns, concentration for e.g., analysis, writing reports, meetings, coping with interruptions to deal with pressing service issues.
  • Managing occasional distressing/highly distressing or emotional circumstances; dealing with staff problems, patient complaints, and able to convey unwelcome news.
  • Managing occasional/frequent unpleasant commensurate with the requirements of a Chief Executive of front-line clinical services
