Job summary

To work with MDT to provide the best care to children and their families

To promote child development through play within the department

To provide structured play and activities to aid in the diagnostic assessment of children with social and communication difficulties.

To use play to prepare children for medical examinations and treatment.

To ensure the outpatient department is a safe and friendly environment.

Main duties of the job

To plan and facilitate early skills groups for children with complex needs and disabilities.

To work with the MDT to provide assessments for children with social communication difficulties.

To produce and deliver a comprehensive verbal and written report regarding each individual assessment, to aid with possible diagnosis.

To work along side nursing team to provide distraction therapy for patients undergoing procedures such as venepuncture, having regard for age and stage of development.

To plan, negotiate and deliver play therapy to meet the needs of children with identified phobias

Be responsible for displays within the department, ensuring department looks welcoming at all times. Incorporate children's own work whenever possible.

  • NNEB/BTEC level 3 or equivalent experience

  • Experience of working with children with additional needs and challenging behaviours
  • Experience in designing and running a range of play activities

Desirable

  • Experience of working with Children and young people of a range of ages 0 -16 years
  • Awareness of child care and welfare issues
  • An understanding of Autism
