Job summary

Exciting opportunities have arisen within the new Kent & Medway Orthopaedic Centre - Day Care Surgery, at Maidstone Hospital for a Staff Nurse 12 months contract. Over 200 new posts will support the new Centre, which is part of a national scheme to deliver more than 50 new surgical hubs across England. The new Centre will open in Summer 2024 and treat patients from across the region, increasing the Trust's capacity for planned surgical procedures.

The Centre will contain the latest novel open plan laminar flow theatres; open-plan surgical areas where up to three patients are treated in a dedicated space with a specialised air canopy over each station to prevent the spread of infection. The new facility will also include a 14-bed inpatient ward and a 10-bed day case ward, with recovery, x-ray and therapy space, all within a dedicated elective building.

The Kent and Medway Orthopaedic Centre will work alongside our existing services to provide care. Our amazing Maidstone Orthopaedic Centre (MOU) and Maidstone Short Stay Unit (MSSU) will all continue.

You will receive structured training to work in this specialist area whilst working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide a consistent and high standard of patient centred care.

Main duties of the job

The Centre willexpand orthopaedic surgical capacity across Kent and Medway, playing an important part in elective recovery and the reduction of patient waiting times across the region.

The Kent and Medway Orthopaedic Centre will work alongside our existing services to provide care. Our amazing Maidstone Orthopaedic Centre (MOU) and Maidstone Short Stay Unit (MSSU) will all continue.

The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for the patients. She/he will liaise closely with the Band 6 and 7 to ensure efficient and effective bi-directional communication, in order to deliver a high quality service to the patient and their relatives.

You will be working closely with management and other healthcare professionals, as well as supervising, supporting and developing within the team, encouraging the delivery of high-quality care and experiences to patients.

Possession of excellent communication skills and being able to adapt to any situation is essential. You must be prepared to teach others your invaluable skills and you will have the ability to work well within a multidisciplinary team whilst being a role model to others. Mentorship is desirable.

Once your pre-employment checks have been completed you will be contacted by Recruitment to arrange your start date which will be in line with one of our Corporate Inductions.

Following your Corporate Induction you will be expected to attend the Trusts 2-week Induction Programme for RNs, NAs, RMs, ODPs and Paramedics. The programme is full-time (please [email protected] this is problematic)and will involve travel to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area, classroom-based sessions and e-learning.

Qualifications

Essential

  • First level registered nurse registered with Nursing and Midwifery Council

Desirable

  • ENB 998 - Teaching and Assessing I Clinical Practice or willingness to undertake
  • Willingness to undertake specialist course relevant to area

Experience/ Knowledge

Essential

  • Is able to manage own workload and delegate to others
  • Be able to prioritise workload and manage time effectively
  • A working knowledge of the use of research in developing nursing care and clinical products
  • Have an in-depth knowledge of the issues surrounding the scope of professional practice and accountability

Desirable

  • Possess 18 months post registration
  • Possess 1 year surgical experience
