We have an exciting opportunity for a Dispenser to join our friendly and dynamic Dispensing Team.

We are looking for an individual to work 34 hours per week in supporting the delivery of an excellent and expanding service to our patients.

For applicants without experience, full training will be provided.

Main duties of the job

To provide comprehensive dispensing service to the practice by undertaking thedaily processing of repeat prescriptions for both dispensing and non-dispensingpatients and to provide full dispensing support to the Upper Eden MedicalPractice.

To accurately and efficiently process all relevant prescriptions as authorised byGPs and other Health Professional prescribers where appropriate in accordancewith the principles of good practice.

Job responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities, which follows, represents the broad range of tasks which may be required to be undertaken either routinely or periodically. This list is not exhaustive and the role may include additional duties which are not listed here.

Dispensing

  • Dispensing acute and repeat prescriptions in line with UEMG standard operating procedure.
  • Not to dispense medicines to unauthorised persons, without the doctors consent
  • Dispensing repeat prescription requests received by telephone calls, by e-mail, by fax and those delivered to the surgery
  • To ensure that all medicines and appliances dispensed are checked against the prescription and whenever there is doubt about the appropriateness of the item, or about the dose or labelling instructions to check with the authorising prescriber or duty doctor
  • Updating patients repeat screens on Doctors instructions
  • Dispensing private prescriptions
  • Dispensing black listed prescriptions, pricing and recording them
  • Checking colleagues dispensing
  • Ensuring the Dispensary area remains clean and tidy
  • Maintaining complete and accurate records for controlled drugs
  • Covering colleagues for sickness and holidays

Prescriptions

  • Handing out prescriptions and collecting charges when receiving and processing.
  • Receiving prescription repeats electronically or in person.
  • Collecting private charges for private prescriptions, vaccines and holiday prophylactic medication as necessary
  • Sorting, stamping and endorsing prescriptions
  • Completing backs of prescriptions
  • Generating prescriptions

Stock Control

  • Ordering appropriate quantities of goods via the telephone / wholesalers computer.
  • Returning goods to wholesalers.
  • Stocking shelves, refrigerators and other storage areas using rotation method.
  • Removing out of date stock from the shelves, refrigerators and other storage areas.
  • Disposal of returned unused medicines.
  • Ensuring the storage area remains safe, clean and tidy at all times and that
  • Cleaning schedules are maintained.

Person Specification

Skills and Aptitudes

Essential

  • Understanding of clinical protocols and Terminology
  • Excellent oral and written communication Skills
  • Excellent telephone manner
  • Ability to prioritise & manage own workload
  • Friendly, helpful and can do approach
  • Ability to carry out work accurately to specified deadlines
  • Close attention to detail
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Able to work under pressure
  • Able to maintain a high level of confidentiality

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE grade A to C / 4-9 in English and Maths

Desirable

  • Proof of Dispensary Qualification
  • Buttercups Training

Knowledge

Essential

  • Dispensing medicines within Primary Care setting
  • Managing Stock Control and stock rotation
  • Use of Microsoft Office (word and excel)
  • Use of a GP clinical System
  • Understanding, acceptance and adherence to the need for strict confidentiality

Desirable

  • Dispensing medicines within a pharmacy or GP setting
  • Previous experience in a similar role.
