Job summary
We are delighted to offer a 12-month fixed-term post as a Fellow in Medical Education dedicated to developing expertise in educational theory, practice, organisation and research related to postgraduate psychiatric training. This post would suit either a higher trainee (ST4 and above) wishing for an out-of-programme experience (OOPE) or a post-MRCPsych doctor who has completed core training in psychiatry and wishes to take a year out before applying for higher training posts.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will lead a number of projects looking at medical education at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
The post holder will work closely with the Director of Postgraduate Psychiatric Training and the Postgraduate Medical Education Team on educational projects offering an opportunity to engage in teaching, QI and projects with all cohorts of trainees in SLaM. There will also be the opportunity to understand medical education at operational level and to connect with other education fellows employed in the Trust.
About us
SLaM provides the widest range of mental health services in the UK and has a commitment to excellence in education and has dedicated directors of both postgraduate and undergraduate psychiatry. The postgraduate training programme, delivered in collaboration with south London NHS partners, provides training for almost 300 doctors training in psychiatry as well as training for foundation trainees and general practice vocational training.
The IoPPN is a school of King's College London (KCL) and has an outstanding international reputation in the field of research. Most clinical academics at IoPPN have honorary consultant posts in SLaM and many SLaM consultants have honorary/visiting positions at IoPPN. GKT School of Medical Education at KCL is the largest centre for the education of doctors, dentists and other healthcare professionals in Europe. Most of the undergraduate psychiatric medical education across all years of the medical school is provided by SLaM.

Job responsibilities
The post holder will have the opportunity to work with senior medical educators who can support their development as an educator during the placement and advise on opportunities for personal development. A customised programme of training and educational experience will be encouraged.
The post holder will be an integral member of the postgraduate educational faculty of SLaM and will have the opportunity to observe and contribute to all aspects of the postgraduate programmes and to gain an understanding of structure and governance within education.
The role is designed to develop the individuals expertise in all aspects of medical education in line with the Professional Standards of the Association of Medical Education (AoME).

Qualifications and Training
Essential
- Fully registered with the General Medical Council
- 3 years of experience in postgraduate psychiatry
- Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent
Desirable
- Evidence of post-graduate study and qualifications in medical education
Experience and Knowledge
Essential
- An active and proven interest in medical education
- Critical appraisal and data analysis to a high level
- Enthusiasm and confidence in teaching and facilitating roles and willingness to develop those skills to a high degree
Desirable
- Experience in delivery of medical education for medical students or postgraduate trainees
- Experience of undertaking research and disseminating results
