Are you a passionate and dedicated Nurse who would like to make a difference to patients lives and enable patients to maintain a health lifestyle.

Here in Surgical Pre-assessment Clinic we provide a detailed assessment on our patients to optimise them for elective surgery. We are predominantly based in Cheltenham General Hospital but some sessions are held in Gloucester will be required. We assess patients from a variety of specialties including Urology, Breast, Gynaecology, Colorectal, Upper GI, Vascular, Head and Neck and Orthopaedics.

Looking to the future our surgical activity will increase due to service expanding for elective surgery. Therefore, recruiting at this time is pivotal to support the NHS Elective Recovery plan and to be a part of this exciting journey together.

You will be joining a welcoming and motivated team, dedicated to supporting you throughout your development. Successful candidates will receive a induction programme to facilitate you through this exciting journey to develop a set of in-depth patient assessment skills.

We are seeking highly motivated and dynamic nurses with a shared vision in delivery of the very best patient experience and outcomes, whilst continuing to strive for quality improvements in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

This would be an ideal opportunity for ambitious nurses to gain valuable experience with patient assessment, working autonomously within the clinics. You will be required to assess patients fitness for a variety of surgical procedures. This will include admission and discharge planning, optimisation of the patients general health and also specific health conditions such as anaemia. We work closely with the Anaesthetists on a daily basis ensuring our patients are prepared and informed to have the best and safest surgical journey from start to finish.

We are looking for candidates with a minimum of one year's post registration experience to equip them with the experience to be confident decision makers once trained in the assessment skills. You should have a flexible approach and the ability to work on your own initiative. Act as a role model and are able to lead by example to ensure the Trust's Values and Behaviours are reinforced. Good computer skills are essential as we move forward with the digital journey Trust wide. Transferable skills such as venapuncture and interpreting ECGs are desirable but not essential as full training will be given.

Job responsibilities

We are looking for Nurses that are able to:

- Assess, plan, implement, evaluate and provide high quality nursing care within Pre-Assessment Clinic.

- Work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team, working with Anaesthetists and other health care professionals within and outside of the Trust.

- Manage a caseload of patients within a defined clinical area.

-Provide support to the senior members of staff in the management and supervision of the defined clinical area.

- To provide accurate and detailed record keeping

- Good IT skills

Main Duties

- You will be allocated a telephone or a face to face clinic once competent and assess patients throughly to optimise them for elective surgery.

- Become competent in auscultation assessment in patients heart and lungs. Assessing ECG's and develop an understanding of intrepting ECG's

- Throughout your development you will be able to gain more specialist knowledge in the Pre Assessment field and complete specific competencies to delivery comprehensive care.

- Follow up on outstanding patient criteria such as blood results, swab results and Anaesthetic reviews to ensure patients are prepared for their surgery.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Active registration with NMC as a Registered Nurse
  • Recognised Nursing Degree or equivalent
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of a professional portfolio, registration revalidation and commitment to lifelong learning

Desirable

  • Recognised Mentoring and Assessing in Clinical Practice course

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of one year's post registration experience
  • Knowledge of IT systems such as Trakcare and EPR or other hospital computer systems
  • Basic Pharmacological knowledge

Desirable

  • Experience in an acute surgical environment
  • Research aware

Knowledge/ Skills

Essential

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work under own initiative while prioritising workload
  • Able to effectively and appropriately escalate concerns to reduce risk and promote patient safety
  • Demonstrates ability to use clinical reasoning skills and techniques to assess and plan care: deliver, evaluate and amend the treatment plan.
