Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to work on large-scale collaborations with industry partners as well as driving and supporting UCLPartners international footprint.

Main duties of the job

The Enterprise function acts as a front door to industry and small and medium-sized enterprises (SME). The Commercial Director will work closely with the Directors of Discovery, Solutions and Implementation to pull through UCLPartners industry and SME offering at scale and will be accountable for the Office for Life Sciences (OLS) Health Innovation Network (HIN) success metrics reporting and tracking.

This role is suited to experienced directors or large programme leads who have a proven interest in innovation and technology, and are committed to improving health and social care through adoption and development of innovation.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Own our industry pipeline, ensuring that UCLPartners finds, engages and supports innovators in health and care
  • Generate additional income for UCLPartners, in close collaboration with the Director of Solutions
  • Support and drive the presence of UCLPartners with international trade bodies to further UCLPartners footprint at home
  • Own the delivery of our Office for Life Sciences (OLS) service, ensuring UCLPartners is represented
  • Support the Chief Innovation Officer to create a collaborative and impactful innovation pipeline serving our partners and the public
  • Lead the design and delivery of multiple programmes within the Enterprise function and support programme handovers of this work across the innovation pipeline
  • Proactively drive the visibility and profile of UCLPartners and innovations in the pipeline
  • Engage with local NHS partners to support locally developed innovation and advise on appropriate commercialisation route
  • Collaborate with our NHS partners, industry, and other stakeholders to capture and share learnings to support innovation development from research to implementation
  • Work with UCLPartners patient and public involvement and engagement team to ensure that clinical and commercial innovators are supported to meaningfully involve patients and the public
  • Establish effective working relationships with peers across HINs nationally and the NHS Innovation Accelerator to share learning, optimise opportunities for partnership working and avoid duplication
  • Contribute to national initiatives underpinning the continued development of the HIN and associated workstreams
  • Lead the Commercial team and ensure team members develop and thrive in their roles
  • Provide visible leadership and role modelling in the development and maintenance of a positive culture, standards and values
  • Champion equity, diversity and inclusion and an understanding of how these principles apply to this role

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working within the NHS, either in a clinical or innovation transformation role, experience in a life science (health technology) or health research setting is desirable
  • Demonstrable leadership enabling delivery of innovation or transformation programmes of work
  • Previous experience of leading or implementing change, innovation or transformation in healthcare
  • Collaborative leadership style with experience in co-designed programmes of work
  • Understanding of national health and social care strategy and policy
  • Experience of working in partnerships internally and across multiple organisations, ideally including working with industry and across academic networks
  • Experience providing/presenting complex, sensitive or contentious informations where developed persuasive, negotiation or empathetic skills are required
  • Ability to influence and negotiate across organisations, constructively challenging the status quo
  • Credibility to build relationships, develop networks and build alliances to achieve organisational objectives
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge in transformation and/or innovation
  • Ability to make judgements involving highly complex facts or situations which require the analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options
  • An understanding of the importance of patient, carer and community involvement in innovation development and adoption
  • Ability to bring others in to deliver the organisations objectives including leveraging resources to reach goals and take considered risks
  • Demonstrable experience and skills in project management, methodologies and techniques for planning, monitoring, and controlling, including resource planning and risk management
  • Ability to effectively manage a complex range of competing priorities to achieve goals
  • Experience managing project teams with project administration and success tracking
  • Ability to utilise excellent analytical and judgement skills, deciding best strategies and course of action in challenging situations to secure effective delivery and benefit of outcomes
