The Urology Consultant team at Ashford & St Peter's is currently made up of eightwhole time equivalent (WTE) Consultants and this post will be for the eighth WTE post. Therole will provide Prostate diagnostic capacity, will be involved in developing stone treatmentpathways and services and also support two other Urology Consultants in providing anemergency ureteric and bladder reconstruction service - thus being part of a dedicatedthree person Urological team to provide Urological planning and support to our Centre forEndometriosis and Minimally Invasive Gynaecology (CEMIG) team and Colorectal team.The department covers:? Urological Oncology and intravesical chemotherapy.? Prostate cancer diagnostics and oncological management.? Non muscle invasive bladder cancer management.? Priority Access Clinics, Haematuria clinics, Rapid Access Prostate clinics and ErectileDysfunction clinics.? Urodynamics and Urogynaecology.? Laparoscopic renal surgery incl. radical nephrectomy and pyeloplasty.? Modern treatment of urinary tract calculi incl. lithotripsy/percutaneous renal surgery/ureteroscopy / Extra-corporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL).? Flexible cystoscopy and Catheter clinic with facility for outpatient urethral dilations

Main duties of the job

Deliver Clinical, Educational, Managerial Services of the highest professional standard atConsultant Level to the Department? Work with existing consultants and the multi-disciplinary team to provide a high qualitywell-led service for patients of Ashford & St Peter's, including the diagnosis,investigations, treatment and management of patients, in accordance with Trust policiesand practices.? Deliver Direct Clinical Care to patients, through all parts of the Department assistingclinical decision-making and sharing equally in the workload.? The Consultant team will provide comprehensive senior clinical cover to the Department.? To provide clinical care for patients undergoing Urology outpatient appointments,diagnostics, surgery and other related activities to ensure a high standard of serviceand education.? To contribute to the development, compliance and professional requirements and theTrust priorities and policies.? To actively participate in the supervision and training of a multidisciplinary work force inthe Surgery/Urology Department.? Assessment of patients.? Provide consultant cover in ward rounds, multi-disciplinary team meetings, clinics,theatre time.on request from consultant colleagues in other specialties.? Engage with medical, nursing, management and all relevant co-workers in the delivery ofdepartment objectives: to provide clinical leadership, improve the patient experience;ensure the highest quality clinical care.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will hold a 10 Programmed Activity Contract and participate in the 1:8 on-call rota.On-call commitments are arranged in weekly blocks once every eight weeks. During this period,the on-call Consultant is responsible for all emergency admissions. The on-call comprises a dailyward round with full availability to deal with problems from 8:00am to 5:00pm from Monday toThursday.Evening periods are supported by middle-grade staff from 5:00pm to 11:00pm. Although there isno elective activity conducted during this period two emergency clinics are carried out by the oncallconsultant, on a Wed AM and Thurs AM, for urgent cases. The subsequent weekend on call(Friday to Sunday) is completed by a formal hand-over on Monday morning with a mandatory 24-hour rest period (no clinical activity is expected on that day).The successful post holder will deliver and develop the prostate cancer diagnostic pathway andsupport general urology services including stone services. They will also help set up and delivermultidisciplinary working with CEMIG and the colorectal teams for patients needing operativeinvolvement for ureteric reconstruction.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Fully registered with the General Medical Council
  • CCT (certificate of completion of training) or CESR (certificate of eligibility for specialist recognition) within 6 months of interview for accreditation and inclusion on GMC specialist registrar.
  • Post-CCT Fellowship to have harnessed and developed open urological operating skills.

Desirable

  • Undertaken a post CCT fellowship experience specifically designed for broad open operative and clinical exposure.

Experience

Essential

  • Well-developed skills in general urology, prostate diagnostics including local anaesthetic transperineal prostate biopsy, stone surgery and good experience in open operating through training and / or post CCT fellowship to facilitate role in supporting the ureteric and bladder reconstruction service.
  • Wide experience of general urology and urological emergencies
  • Knowledge of current trends in specialty
  • Evidence of continuing professional education
  • Providing direct clinical care.
  • Active participation in clinical audit.
  • Experience in developing effective and collaborative working relationships

Desirable

  • Leading a change or innovation in the workplace with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Previous involvement in multidisciplinary team approach to gynaecological endometriosis surgery planning.
