The Children's Day Surgery Unit is a brand new, state of the art building which opened in July 2023, consisting of admissions and discharge areas, recovery and 2 state of the art theatres.

The successful candidate will have ward and recovery skills (or be keen and willing to work towards these), be proactive, self-motivated, have strong inter-personal skills, and a vision for service improvement. This role is expected to actively support and assist in the management and delivery of high quality care to patients.

At Evelina London in the Children's Day Surgery Unit, we carry out routine and specialised day case surgery. Evelina London CDSU is co-located with St Thomas' Hospital. We perform a wide range of elective procedures, including ENT, general, urology, ophthalmology, plastics, and gastroenterology.

Main duties of the job

In this role, you would get the chance to rotate through admissions, recovery and discharge areas with support from our practice development nurses to drive and enhance your career. With an excellent education offering, including in-house courses for recovery, we will support you to flourish.

In this role you will be expected to;

  • Perform recovery, admission and discharge duties and coordinating at times . Ensuring the smooth running of the unit.
  • Support and mentor junior staff.
  • Play an active role in teaching and education of colleagues and joining staff members and students.
  • Participate in different link nurse opportunities
  • Actively participate in areas of Clinical Governance, Audit, and Research projects.
  • Actively participate in service improvement projects.

Job responsibilities

  • Responsible for carrying out clinical practice within designated clinical areas, ensuring that high quality, current evidence-based nursing assessment, care planning, implementation, interventions and evaluations for patients is provided from admission through to discharge.
  • Will be responsible for the application of knowledge across the range of work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
  • To ensure that patients receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.
  • Recognise and avoid situations that may be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the individuals.
  • Recognise the significance of observations made, and use them to develop and initiate nursing assessments and devise a plan of care.
  • Carry out those activities necessary to conduct a comprehensive assessment of a persons nursing requirements.
  • Will ensure that all patients will have a discharge plan that is safe and appropriate for their needs.
  • Work alongside the multi-disciplinary team to ascertain treatments and advise on nursing priorities.
  • Take a clear and concise history from patients by assessing their health and wellbeing and complete documentation ensuring that all entries are accurate and legible and that all information systems are maintained.
  • Undertake prescribed physical observations as follows: blood pressure, temperature, respirations, blood sugars, urinalysis, weight and height, and report exceptions appropriates.
  • Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication including transfusion of blood and blood products.
  • Is wholly accountable for his / her practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve his / her knowledge and professional competence.
  • Will be familiar with the Health and Safety at Works Act, and be aware of its implications and ensure that local unit and departmental policies are followed.
  • Will adopt a patient orientated approach to work
  • Will be familiar with the wards fire, manual handling and C.O.S.H.H. policies and ensure that all nurses in the ward are aware of the policies.
  • Will be responsible for the provision and receipt of complex, sensitive or contentious information related to patients, patient care, relatives, staff and other multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with all members of the multi- disciplinary team regarding patient care.
  • Will communicate with patients and relatives, making reports and liaising, as appropriate; with medical staff other members of the care team and management.

Knowledge/Qualification

Essential

  • Qualified nurse/ODP
  • Educated to degree level or equivilent

Desirable

  • Specialised course
  • SSAP or mentorship
  • experience of caring for paediatric patients

Knowledge

  • Demonstrates apptitude for professional development
  • Completed preceptorship programme
  • Demonstrates sound knowledge of theatre/day surgery procedures

Desirable

  • Experience of service improvement projects
  • Experience of udertaking audits

Skills

  • Evidence of clinical practice in admissions/discharge and/or recovery
  • Demonstrate evidence of working effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrate the ability to use IT clinical applications
