Speciality Doctor in Sexual and Reproductive Health

8 Programmed Activities per week (32 hours per week)

Applications are invited for the post of a part-time Speciality doctor in SRH based in the fully integrated Sexual Health service at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder would be expected to work closely with the Lead consultant for Reproductive Health to facilitate provision of a comprehensive, high quality Sexual and Reproductive health service.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic multidisciplinary team and will be integral to our continuing programme of improvements in the service. In addition to the busy clinical service, the Department has an active teaching and training programme which the successful applicant will be expected to develop and actively contribute to.

Applicants must have full registration with the GMC and must hold a current Diploma of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (DFSRH), Letters of Competence in Intra-uterine techniques (LoC IUT), Sub-dermal Implant procedures (LoC SDI insertion and removal) with experience at SHO level or above and experience of working in an integrated sexual health service. Applicants must have the skills and experience of providing a wide range of contraceptive services with extensive experience of providing long-acting contraception.

Main duties of the job

This post will be based in Camberwell Sexual Health Centre where the successful candidate will be providing the full range of contraceptive and sexual health services for both walk-in patients and booked appointments. This will include:

Intra-uterine device (IUD) insertion and removal including for emergency contraception

Sub-dermal Implant (SDI) insertion and removal

General Contraception Clinics

General Genitourinary Medicine Clinics (GUM)

Emergency Clinics (GUM and Contraception)

Senior Cover - Supporting the Clinic as the Senior Clinician

The role will include significant training of both undergraduate and postgraduate doctors and nurses. Having a Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare Trainer qualification and experience of providing training for candidates working towards their Diploma of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (DFSRH) and Letters of Competence (LOC) in IUD and subdermal implant procedures is desirable.

The 8 programmed activities (PAs) will be split to include 7.125 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 0.875 PA for supporting professional activity (SPA).

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Together with other colleagues to provide a service for patients. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.
  • Shared responsibility with other colleagues for providing 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
  • To provide a service for patients referred to or walking into the service with contraceptive and sexual health needs. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the service.
  • To contribute to the smooth running of the sexual health and contraceptive service i.e. administrative responsibilities.
  • To attend clinical supervision and to keep up to date in the latest knowledge, developments, research, and treatments in the field of contraception and sexual health.
  • To participate in the development of the Contraceptive Service and to work with other providers within KHP.
  • To contribute to the training, management and clinical supervision of staff who work within the sexual health and contraceptive service.
  • To provide support to nurses working to Patient Group Directives and providing LARC procedures
  • To participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of doctors and nurses and carry out examination duties for medical students as required
  • Maintain knowledge and expertise in accordance with the CPD requirements of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare and relevant Royal Colleges.
  • Participation in Multi-disciplinary Meetings.
  • Contribution to audit and clinical governance programmes.
  • Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group management team.
  • Contribute to the Care Group research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework
  • Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.
  • Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
  • Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the speciality is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
  • Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
  • Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.

Camberwell Sexual Health Centre (CSHC) is a purpose-built facility offering a full range of open-access, walk-in and appointment-based sexual health services including contraception, reproductive health care and the management of sexually transmitted infections. Specialist complex contraception, specialist GUM, HIV services and psychosexual referral clinics with appointments are held at the nearby Caldecot centre. The department serves an ethnically diverse inner city population with the highest prevalence of HIV, STIs and contraceptive needs in the UK.The sexual health service sees over 30,000 client attendances per year.

A second sexual, reproductive health & HIV service operates at Beckenham Beacon.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS/MB BCh/MB ChB (or equivalent medical degree)
  • Diploma of the Faculty of Sexual & Reproductive Healthcare (DFSRH)

Desirable

  • Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare Registered Trainer (FRT)

Registration

  • Full Registration with GMC/GDC with License to Practice.

Training and Experience
