Job summary

This is an exciting appointment for a Locum Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at University College Hospital London.

The Paediatric Emergency Department is located within the Emergency Department at University College Hospital with around 19,000 attendances a year of children & young people, less than 18 years old. It benefits from a newly refurbished dedicated 8 bedded Paediatric area staffed by Paediatric nurses, open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

This area has its own reception and has separate waiting areas for both children and young people. There is a team of play specialists that support the area.

The consultant will be expected both to deliver direct care to patients, supervise middle grade and junior medical staff, and support Nurse Practitioners as required.

Main duties of the job

o Leading the delivery of clinical care to patients in the Paediatric Emergency Departmento Development of the UCLH strategy for CYP Emergency Medicine and service improvement in the Emergency Department.o Oversight of clinical governance in CYP Emergency Medicineo Oversight of Paediatric Emergency Medicine Fellows including rota management and Educational Supervisiono Participate in the emergency access improvement programme (which targets ED performance improvement).o Provide in our programme of clinical quality improvement initiatives.o Attendance (within the limitations of rostering) at weekly divisional operational meeting, EAIP board and monthly divisional board.

The UCLH Paediatric Emergency Department is one of the busiest and safest in the country.

The department is entering an exciting phase with the physical redevelopment of our facilities nearing completion, full digitisation of our clinical workflow, a fully-funded workforce transformation, an evolving programme of innovation and evolving links with sector acute care partners through the North Central London Startwell Program.Our workforce consists of medical staff from CYP and Emergency Medicine with a dedicated nursing team. We also employ Paediatric Emergency Medicine Fellows from a background of Paediatric Higher Training who have a specialist interest in emergency care.

This position reports to the Divisional Clinical Director for the Emergency Services Division and will provide medical leadership to the delivery and development of our clinical services within the CYP ED. You will work alongside consultants in CYP and Emergency Medicine, the departmental nursing body and general management teams.

The clinical team in the emergency department, led by specialists in emergency medicine and nursing, seeks to provide patients with the best clinical care as quickly as possible, as well as to allay the distress and anxiety which is often associated with accidents and emergencies. UCLH aims to treat and admit or discharge all patients within four hours, except when patients clinical needs dictate that the patient continue to receive treatment in the emergency department for longer.The residential population served by our Paediatric Emergency Department predominantly comes from the boroughs of Camden, Islington and Westminster, and the ED serves much of Londons West End, and has a catchment area incorporating the major railway terminals at Kings Cross, St Pancras and Euston, as well as several busy underground stations.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

  • Eligible for full UK GMC Registration
  • FCEM (or equivalent)
  • On GMC Specialist List in Emergency Medicine, or at the time of interview within 6 months of anticipated date of CCT in Emergency Medicine NB: Non UK trained doctors must be on the GMC register and Specialist Register in Emergency Medicine at the date of interview
  • Provider status in ALS, ATLS (or equivalent) and in APLS (or equivalent).

Desirable

  • Instructor status in one or more life support courses (ALS, ATLS, APLS, PALS)

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience in Emergency Medicine at a level equivalent to senior trainee or Consultant, leading a multidisciplinary team effectively
  • Ability and willingness to take full responsibility for clinical care of patients of any acuity in the Emergency Department Knowledge of and engagement with standards and performance targets relevant to Emergency Medicine practice Demonstrable understanding of Clinical Governance in the ED
  • Up-to-date on national guidelines relevant to Emergency Medicine

Clinical Skills

Essential

  • Ability to triage / stream patients effectively and manage patient flows within the Emergency Department Ability to advise on the efficient and smooth running of an Emergency Medicine service
  • Ability to manage patients on a Clinical Decision Unit, and in particular patients with minor head injury Basic trauma ultrasound skills.
