Job summary

As an ENT Practitioner you will work under the guidance and supervision of a Consultant providing face to face consultations in one of our community based clinics. The clinics provide pre-booked appointments for patients referred to the service.

The post holder will work both autonomously, and as part of a team, to deliver evidence based care to this patient group and be proactive and innovative in exploring new ways of delivering care.

Main duties of the job

A range of ENT conditions will be seen in the clinics includes, but are not limited to, Otitis Externa, Otalgia, BPPV, Nasal obstrucition, Tympanic Membrane Perforation, Epistaxis, Hearing loss. You will be responsible for your own caseload of patients who you will assess, diagnose and treat in accordance with NICE, ENT UK and local guidelines. The caseload will include both new patients and those attending for review. The post holder must be competent in performing Nasal Endoscopy and Microsuction, or willing to develop skills under supervision in this area.

Harrow Health Community Services directorate has been awarded a contract to provide general Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) services on behalf local trusts and community services.

Main Responsibilities:

To use evidence-based practice to develop, deliver and maintain a high quality, clinically effective and cost effective primary care service

To provide a comprehensive service to the patients attending the clinic including clinical examination, investigations as needed, diagnosis and management, and referral as appropriate within defined parameters and scope of practice, referring to senior colleagus as needed

  • To ensure patients have consented to, and are fully involved in the implementation of their procedure / treatment plans
  • Interpretation of results where requested for individuals
  • If a prescription is needed, this must be in line with the NHS England and local Trust prescribing guidelines
  • Will work to agreed prescribing budgets and referral pathways
  • To adapt styles of communication appropriately in order to promote empowerment, self-management and health education for patients. Interpreters can be sought as needed.
  • Using the EMIS system the consultation must be recorded in the patients records. Proformas are set on the EMIS system and must be completed by the clinician. These will be shared with all the referring clinicians.
  • Liaise with other team members as appropriate
  • To identify actual or potential clinical risks within scope of practice and take appropriate action using, when required, the appropriate reporting structure
  • To be personally accountable for professional and ethical actions and practices within a framework that adheres to the GMCs requirements and Harrow Health policies and procedures

Service delivery responsibilities:

  • To ensure that patient records and documentation are maintained in line with Harrow Health policies and use of the electronic patient records system. This includes:

o Documenting full, accurate and contemporaneous records of assessments, investigations, procedures, treatments and aftercare.

o Encouraging colleagues to maintain good and complete records.

Working closely with the reception team / administrator, ensuring all records pertinent to patients are filed as appropriate

Work within local policies, protocols and guidelines Harrow Health CIC and local trust guidelines

Ensure Safeguarding Adults and Children is considered, and policies and procedures are followed when concerns are raised

To participate in audits if requested, and use the results, current research, and government guidelines to make recommendations for changes to service delivery and clinical practice, sharing these findings as appropriate.

To collect data, and provide service information to the Team Leader as required.

To ensure that the Clinical Manager / Team Leader / Head of Nursing and Clinical Governance Lead are kept informed on service issues and potential risks.

To work with the Team Leader in delivering and promoting the needs of the service

To work with the Clinical Lead, Team Leader, Head of Nursing and Clinical Governance Lead to meet the Clinical Governance needs of the services, including investigation of incidents (including serious incidents) and complaints, where required.

To remain updated in the use of all equipment used in the service and to report any technical problems or issues with that equipment.

To participate in team meetings to discuss day to day operational issues as required.

o Recognise and work within own competence and keep abreast of developments in practice and topical issues ensuring that skills are maintained

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse
  • Nursing and Midwifery Council Registration
  • Degree level study / equivalent specialist study in ENT / appropriate qualification in ENT care delivery

Desirable

  • Masters degree
  • Non-Medical Prescribing Qualification
  • Management experience / qualification

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working independently, with a minimum of 3 years experience post qualification
  • Relevant experience in ENT services
  • Regular attendance at update meetings
  • Competency in interpreting and acting on pathology, histology and radiology results
  • Understanding of Safeguarding
  • Infection Prevention and Control Procedures, including Asceptic Technique
  • Awareness of local referral pathways
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Desirable

  • Experience of delivering training to colleagues.
