Job summary

The Later Life Service at Callington Road Hospital is looking to recruit an enthusiastic Occupational Therapist who has an interest in working in mental health and with older people.

This post on the Later Life Ward provides the opportunity to develop and use a broad range of your OT skills. You will use a client centred approach, working closely with the MDT to provide individual care as well as group activities. A knowledge of the VdT Model of Creative Ability and Allen's Cognitive Disability Model will also benefit anyone applying for this post.

Callington Road Hospital is an inpatient facility for service users of all ages experiencing mental health problems and includes Adult, PICU and Rehab services as well as Later Life Services. You will work with work with Exercise Specialists, Physiotherapists, Psychologists, Dieticians, and the Art Psychotherapists.

You will be supported by senior OTs to use and further develop your professional skills. You will be expected to be a reflective practitioner, committed to lifelong learning. You will participate in activities related to your own CPD and also the team development, keeping abreast of and implementing, current evidence based intervention. Regular supervision and appraisal are an integrated part of our practice, and you will also have the opportunity to supervise junior OT staff members.

Main duties of the job

Professionally accountable for own caseload, working autonomously to deliver occupational therapy in an inpatient setting.

* To develop and implement occupational therapy treatment plans and provide advice to serviceusers to enable them to maintain, restore or create a balance between their abilities and thedemands of their occupation and environment in the areas of self-care, productivity and leisure. Service users have a range of mental health conditions or learning disabilities.

* To work compassionately with service users and carers to achieve identified occupationaltherapy goals and to promote social inclusion, independence and well-being through a client-centred approach.

* To provide the best possible experience for service users, carers and families.

* To develop professional knowledge and skills through participation in preceptorship and competency framework to take responsibility for service users with increasingly more diverse presentations and more complex problems.

* To facilitate others in the team to develop competence by providing clinical advice and trainingto occupational therapy associate practitioners, assistants and students as appropriate.

* To be committed to activities integral to Quality Improvement.

* To promote at all times a positive image of people with mental health conditions and learningdisabilities.

Clinical Responsibilities, Patient Contact

* Accountable for designated caseload, working within an evidenced based occupational therapytreatment plan and care programme approach under the guidance of the supervisingoccupational therapist. Service users may demonstrate behaviours that challenge and havedifficult family situations of relevance.

* Undertakes occupational therapy assessments, addressing occupational performance and skilldeficits.

* Assesses and manages risk effectively in clinical and community settings including the serviceusers own home

* Works with service users and carers to identify Occupational Therapy goals as part of the overall Multidisciplinary Team plan.

* Develops and implements individual and/or group interventions, in collaboration with theservice user(s) and MDT to achieve therapeutic goals.

* Uses technical and creative skills to engage service users in therapeutic activities andencourages them in a compassionate manner, to support them in achieving their identifiedgoals.

* Monitors and evaluates occupational therapy treatment in order to measure progress andmodifies treatment plans to ensure effectiveness of clinical interventions.

* Provides reports on service user progress at clinical meetings and participates in the clinicaldecision-making process regarding service user care programmes as part of themultidisciplinary team.

* Provides advice, education and training to service users, carers and other healthcare staffinvolved in service users care.

* Undertakes health promotion activities.

* Assesses service users for and fits adapted equipment in the home, as appropriate.

* Responsible for recognising the potential for or signs of service user harm, abuse or neglect,including poor clinical practice, reporting all such concerns and taking all reasonable steps toprotect the service user. Responsible for identifying and reporting concerns regarding thesafeguarding of children who may be at risk.

* Demonstrates safe moving and handling of service users, using equipment as required.

* Demonstrates safe physical interventions in the management of violence and aggression as required.

Responsibility for Information Systems

* Responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive service user records using RIO or otherelectronic systems approved by the Trust and in accordance with the Trust and professional recordkeeping standards.

Staff Management, Training and Development, HR

* Provides training to occupational therapy assistants and students, monitoring and evaluatinglearning outcomes, providing feedback and assessing competencies to facilitate learning in practice.

* Identifies and meets the training needs of carers, volunteers, healthcare staff from otherprofessions and outside agencies regarding occupational performance of service users.

* Provides clinical supervision to occupational therapy assistants.
