The Acute Lung Unit at Royal Bournemouth Hospital is looking to welcome a new Band 5 StaffNurse!

Tell me about the Ward?

The respiratory ward manages the exciting balance of acuity, palliative and everything in between. Our patient group covers a diverse range from young asthmatics to exacerbations' of COPD and patients with lung cancer. We are also home to the Acute Lung Unit, where we provide acutely unwell patients with Non-Invasive Ventilation and Nasal High Flow Oxygen.

Main duties of the job

How will my development be supported?

We offer acute training and a competency programme in speciality areas including Non-Invasive Ventilation and a chest drain competency. You will be offered training in all acute skills such as obtaining ABGs, CVAD and tracheostomy care to help manage our group of patients. Proficiently in each area is supported by senior staff on the ward, our Clinical Education team and Critical Care Outreach. You will also have opportunity to have weekly respiratory study sessions.

What do we need from you?

While we don't need a minimum level of experience in this speciality, we do need you to have a good sense of humour, be improvement minded and be ready to muck in with the team.

Main duties of the job include:

  • You will be expected to carry out a variety of nursing interventions, ensuring patient safety is at the forefront of your mind.
  • To work within a highly skilled team of professionals.
  • To provide high standards of patient care.
  • To work within the Trusts objectives.
  • To ensure that patients are escalated appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • To coordinate all aspects of the patient journey to ensure delivery of the best outcomes for the patient up to and including discharge.
  • To advocate for patients and ensure their voices are heard.
  • To support junior staff and student nurses.

Qualifications

Essential

  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • Advanced Diploma/Degree in Adult Nursing

Desirable

  • SLIP trained/mentorship course

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of caring for patients with acute and long term conditions

Desirable

  • Experience of End of Life Care

Technical Skills Competencies

Essential

  • Demonstrable ability with vital signs monitoring equipment and ability to recognise the deteriorating patient
  • Non IV and IV medication administration

Desirable

  • Administration of blood products or willingness to undertake necessary training
  • Experience of clinical skills such as: ECG recording, CVC, Cannulation and Venepuncture, Male catheterisation
