Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a data scientist to join a unique team aiming to reduce to reduce health inequalities in North East London within the next 3 years.

We are looking for a talented and collaborative colleague, who wants to make a difference. The postholder will work with clinical, data and academic teams to use Natural Language Processing techniques on free-text combined with Electronic Health Record datasets to build a predictive geographical map of heart disease in North East London, allowing better targeting and delivery of diagnostic testing.

Main duties of the job

The Barts Health PREDICT project aims to leverage real-world patient data to extract clinical and social determinants of cardiovascular health, and then identify at-risk social and geographic groups who will have enhanced access to echocardiography, a clinical test that can detect heart disease years before it becomes dangerous.

To excel in this role, you will be capable of independent and team-oriented work, have some academic experience, have skills in building reproducible data pipelines and in real-world data analysis, including machine learning techniques.

Experience

Essential

  • A PhD or masters with equivalent professional experience in a field with relevance to health data science / Epidemiology
  • Experience in natural language processing and AI
  • Expertise building statistical models, use of machine learning using Python libraries, and MLOps tools
  • Experience mining and analysing electronic health records (EHR) and knowledge of clinical terminologies i.e. SNOMED-CT
  • Experience with one or more data management tools (SQL etc.)
  • Demonstrable use of programming in collaborative and Reproducible Analytical Pipelines (Git, DevOps)
  • Experience using data visualisation for understanding and communicating large or complex data to non-technical audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to assimilate new ideas and work with problem owners to turn ideas into practical, applied techniques, and willingness to continue to learn new techniques
  • Demonstrable experience of leading one's own work, including planning and execution
  • Knowledge of appropriate procedures for information governance, especially when using patient data
  • Experience working in the cloud, with platforms for distributed computation and use of GPUs

  • Willingness to work occasionally outside normal hours (but within conditioned hours) to meet deadline
