A new opportunity has arisen for a post as Consultant Medical Virologist at Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership. We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our team and be a driving force in further developing our clinical service.

This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest Virology departments in the country. This post is a medical 10 programmed activity substantive (permanent) post available immediately, with an allowance for work done on call. The departmental and service delivery needs are for the equivalent of a whole-time post, however part-time and flexible working will be considered. The post-holder will join an established team of five other Virology consultants and five clinical scientists.

The Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership (MMMP) is a partnership between Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) and UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). MFT is one of the largest trusts in England and provides a broad range of services including adult and paediatric transplant, critical care and Infectious Diseases.

Applicants will be expected to have relevant qualifications (including CCT or equivalent; and FRCPath or equivalent and experience with clinical virology and public health virology.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work with the Virology clinical team to provide specialist Virology clinical services to the Trust and will be encouraged to develop and pursue areas of specialist interest.

The post-holder will be employed by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust but will be expected to hold an honorary contract with UKHSA to facilitate the provision of public health virology services that the department provides to the Northwest region of England. Our public health activities include providing specialist clinical support to outbreaks within the region, provision of post-exposure treatment for relevant infections and assistance with national incident response. The department is actively involved with research and teaching, having close links with the University of Manchester and being a center for doctors undertaking specialist ID/ Virology training. The department has recently opened a Pathogen Genomics Sequencing Laboratory with UKHSA to facilitate the development of novel diagnostic tools for infectious diseases. The post-holder will therefore have the opportunity to engage in wide range for research and innovation activities as well as undergraduate and post-graduate teaching.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full and specialist registration (with a licence to practice) with in the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • FRCPath or equivalent

Desirable

  • Postgradute Thesis
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Diploma in Infection, Prevention & Control

Clinical experience

Essential

  • Holder of Certification of Completion of Training (CCT) in Medical Virology or Medical Virology/Infectious Diseases, or within six months of aware of CCT or equivalent by date of interview
  • Ability to offer expert opinion and deal with a range of problems
  • Ability to develop an area of specialist clinical interest

Desirable

  • Experience in a range of infection control problems, including outbreak management
  • Experience in management of in-patients or infection clinics including OPAT

Management & Administrative Experience

Essential

  • Ability to advise on efficient & smooth running of specialist service
  • Ability to organise and manage priorities
  • Understanding of clinical governance network
  • Evidence of Audit

Desirable

  • Formal Management training

Teaching Experience

Essential

  • Experience of supervising foundation year trainees or equivalent
  • Ability to teach clinical and laboratory skills

Research Experience
