Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for a 12 month period to join our friendly and enthusiastic team within East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.

The applicant should have the appropriate training and experience to fulfil the requirements of this post.

This appointment offers exciting opportunities in light of the major changes currently taking place in the Obstetric, Gynaecology and Sexual Health Directorate within the Trust. The Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre in Burnley provides all hospital based obstetric deliveries on one site with three Birth centres covering 6,500 deliveries per annum.

The appointee will join 25 other Substantive Consultants at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. The post will be based at Burnley General Hospital, although this may be subject to change.

The exact programme activity allocation will be subject to agreement with the Clinical Director, as this post it to cover long term sickness. The remaining PA's reflect supporting professional activities. These may include teaching, audit, research and CPD.

  • To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
  • To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies
  • To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Division's services plans
  • To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Family Care Division or the Trust.

About us

The post holder will join a fantastic multi-disciplinary team based at the Lancashire Women & Newborn Centre. This is a purpose built, modern unit located on the Burnley General Hospital site, and is the largest in-patient consultant led obstetric unit in the North West. It provides centralised state-of-the-art maternity and gynaecology services.

The Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre includes 5 operating theatres, a consultant led maternity unit, midwife led birthing centre, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Level 3), general, emergency and specialist gynaecology services. There is also a stand alone midwife-led birthing unit off the Hospital site in Blackburn.

Across all our sites we pride ourselves on our teaching and for providing a great experience for trainee doctors.

We have received excellent feedback from medical students, foundation yearoctors and specialty trainees.

The department has a strong commitment to training, in 2019, the team was recognized as the top training unit in the country for the obstetrics training it provides to trainee doctors, also rated very highly for professional development (5th nationally), general gynaecology training (15th) and overall recommendation (7th).

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCOG or appropriate Specialist Qualification
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent ("equivalence" must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by date of AAC)

Clinical Experience & Skills

Essential

  • Clinical training and experience in general
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
  • ATSM Labour ward practice
  • Appropriate experience in labour ward management

Desirable

  • Maximum time as Registrar 10 years
  • Experience relevant to needs of the department.
  • Further ATSM pertinent to obstetrics and gynaecology practice (or equivalent)

Management & Administrative Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues.
  • Knowledge of political context within which we operate
  • Knowledge of principles of audit with evidence of participation.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
  • Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities
  • Ability to manage and lead the O&G firm and multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Evidence of database management/use

Desirable

  • Completion of a management course or programme
  • Negotiation skills experience
  • Experience of Risk Management programmes
  • Ability to use the evidence based and clinical audit to support decision making
  • Ability to manage and lead specialist unit and working parties as appropriate

Research, Teaching and Training experience

Essential

  • Ability to teach clinical skills to Medical, Nursing staff and other disciplines
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Experience of supervising Junior Medical staff
  • Evidence of training for educational supervision as per GMC guidance.

Desirable

  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research
  • Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last 5 years
  • Evidence of having undertaken original research
