Job summary

This is a fantastic opportunity for two staff nurses with an interest in ophthalmology to work in the Medical Retina Service at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team assessing and caring for patients in the Medical Retina outpatient department at the main branch of Moorfields at City Road.

You will be expected to provide comprehensive, ongoing care and support for patients with medical retinal conditions such as Age Related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Uveitis, Genetics related eye disease. You will also be responsible for ensuring that patients receive education and information and to work closely with the senior nurses and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

The successful candidate will be required to be flexible, enthusiastic, and committed to bringing the highest level of nursing care to patients in line with the Quality Agenda of the NHS and the Moorfields Nursing Strategy. You should be able to demonstrate good planning, organisation, and leadership skills.

Experienced mentors are assigned to all new staff and there are excellent opportunities for continuing professional development.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for the assessment and management of care needs of patients in the Medical Retina service. They will assess patients and implement and evaluate care provision.

The post holder will act as a co-ordinator in the outpatient clinics ensuring patients are seen and assessed by all members of the multidisciplinary team. They will also supervise junior members of staff and students.

The post holder will be a key member of staff in participating in the development of care of patients attending the Medical Retina service. They will be working independently/autonomously and are accountable for their own professional actions. They are responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of service users, and always working in a manner that promotes the dignity and human rights of patients and clients.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Responsible for carrying out clinical ophthalmic practice within designated clinical area, ensuring that high quality, current evidence-based nursing assessment, care planning, implementation, interventions and evaluations are central to the patients care.

Independently manage a group of patients within the ophthalmic speciality whilst working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised and personalised direct care.

To be involved in carrying out nursing roles, such as fluorescein angiography, Photodynamic therapy and assisting in the delivery of intravitreal injections.

Responsible for the application of knowledge across the range of ophthalmic work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication.

Act as advocate for patients within the area, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.

Ensure that patients receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.

Recognise the significance of observations made, and use them to develop and initiate patient assessment and together with the patient and carer devise a plan of care.

Carry out those activities necessary to conduct a comprehensive assessment of a persons nursing requirements.

Carry out ophthalmic nursing procedures and treatments, checking on and maintaining the highest possible standards.

Complete documentation ensuring that all entries are accurate and legible and that all information systems are maintained.

Responsible for the educating the patient and carer on the importance of compliance with treatment and medication.

Professional Registration/Education

Essential

  • Registered General Nurse/First level degree: NMC Registration
  • Evidence of continued professional development

Desirable

  • Recognised qualification in ophthalmology

Experience

  • Experience in delivering evidence based practice
