Orthotics and Prosthetics is a hands-on health science that combines technology and art. It focuses on the design, construction and application of Orthosis and Prostheses - assistive devices that are applied externally to the body to help improve movement and independence in people who have physical and functional limitations. Orthotics and Prosthetics studies anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and engineering, prosthetic and orthotic prescription, and design and fabrication - including material properties, ergonomics and digital design. This field operates in a clinical and technical workshop setting and works in a collaborative and integrated way with other medical specialties, such as Orthopaedics, to provide patients with the best health outcomes.
