Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate, motivated band 5 Nurse who has sound infant feeding knowledge to work within our Infant Feeding Team based at the Princess Anne Hospital for 22.5 hours a week over 3 days to cover maternity leave. You will be providing specialist infant feeding care, be enthusiastic to undertake training to become a tongue tie practitioner. With the Support of the Infant Feeding Team lead you will be part of the day-to-day running of the Infant Feeding Team and twice weekly tongue tie clinics for our Maternity Service.

The Infant Feeding Team work 7 days a week to give specialist support and advice to staff and new parents on their feeding journey. The Team is based on the postnatal ward at the Princess Anne Hospital. Help and support is provided at the bedside, in clinic settings, virtually via videocall and telephone. Our Maternity Unit is a busy fast paced service with 5000 births per year and a breastfeeding initiation rate of 81%. We are currently working towards achieving the Baby Friendly Initiative accreditation.

What you will do:

In this role you will work in the Infant Feeding Team to help support with the day-to-day running of the infant feeding service. You will provide direct feeding support in the ward areas for families and staff, including supporting colleagues within the Infant Feeding Team. You will be involved in the referrals made for complex support and suspected tongue tie, responding to these appropriately with the support from the Infant Feeding Team lead. You will be closely involved with the ongoing work of implementing the Baby Friendly Standards, which will include education for families and staff. You will gain experience in service audit identifying key areas of focus to improve the service You will be able to work inter-professionally with voluntary and statutory groups across Southampton City and New Forest to protect and promote breastfeeding in Southampton. You will need to have a driving licence or have the ability to travel between the Princess Anne Hospital and the New Forest Birth Centre.

The role is for 22.5 hours per week over 3 shifts working flexibly to cover service needs between Monday - Friday.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma)
  • Registered nurse on appropriate part of the register
  • Knowledge of current issues within acute Health Service
  • Understanding of personal accountability
  • Knowledge of own role within the team
  • Provide evidence of teaching and supporting learners in practice in the role of practice supervisor
  • Awareness of evidence-based practice
  • Awareness of responsibilities for management of infection control
  • Evidence of on-going personal development
  • Able to use initiative

Desirable

  • Evidence of recent study
  • Previous experience/qualification in relevant specialty
  • Teaching experience
