GUM involves medical care of patients with STIs, immediate contraceptive needs, genital dermatoses, sexual dysfunction or HIV. This field of medicine collaborates with other medical specialties, and involves services and care provided by multi-disciplinary teams. It involves a holistic health care approach to patients with sexual health conditions. It seeks to prevent STIs, HIV and unplanned pregnancy, collaborate and consult with other medical specialties and the primary care sector, identify and manage comorbidities, promote sexual health, and deliver integrated sexual health services. As this field is studied with Internal Medicine, Doctors are able to diagnose, treat and manage a wide range of general medical conditions and manage patients in acute, on call, or outpatient settings.

GUM Physicians are specialty and generalist Physicians. They lead teams who deliver specialist GUM & HIV medical services and care. They can manage acutely unwell patients, including those with chronic disease, co-morbidities or complexity, and they can make referrals for further specialist care. To pursue a career in this field, registered doctors who have completed foundation and core training, can apply to undertake dual training in Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) and Internal Medicine stage 2 (IMS2), which is entered at Specialty Trainee Year 4 (ST4), takes approximately 4 years to complete, and leads to a dual CCT and dual entry onto the GMC specialist register.
